Cleveland goes to the movies: ‘Superman’ movie premiere

Photos by John Petkovic

Superman made its Cleveland premiere on Monday, at Phoenix Theatres in Great Northern Mall. The private screening drew 350 people across three theaters, including some dressed in capes.

Takeaways:

  • Unlike Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Superman isn’t a dark dive into moral ambiguity. It has an old-timey, aw-shucks feel where lines between good and bad are clearly drawn. Superman’s sidekick Krypto is a charming, rambunctious pooch.

  • Cleveland is a de facto character. The 200 Public Square building is a reoccurring backdrop in scenes, as is the Leader Building -- which stands in for The Daily Planet.

  • The Public Square is a battlefield for monsters. The Terminal Tower and Sherwin Williams HQ lurk in the background throughout the film.

  • The final scene could be a commercial for the Arcade. It glows and resonates with elegance.

  • Locals will take pride watching their city star, even if they aren’t fans of superhero flicks.

Class-action lawsuit vs. Ohio: ‘Unconstitutional’ raiding of unclaimed funds

Photos courtesy Cleveland Browns, State of Ohio

As we reported, former Ohio lawmakers threatened to file a class-action lawsuit to prevent state officials from raiding the unclaimed funds account to help finance a Browns stadium in Brook Park.

Well, it’s here. The suit, filed in Columbus by Lakewood firm DannLaw, contends that it is unconstitutional to divert "private property" towards "private stadium construction.”

The filing states that Ohioans must “race the clock” to claim money owed to them – and that the state “has made little to no effort to reunite unclaimed property to its rightful owners.”

Ohio’s budget calls for taking $1.7 billion out of the account, with $600 million going toward the Browns stadium. Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, an opponent of a Brook Park stadium, has called on Ohioans to claim their money “before the Haslams do.”

Porco: Tiki drinks and a DIY attitude

There were skeptics when Porco Lounge and Tiki Room opened in 2013. Could a tiki bar survive in a city where there were none?

Stefan Was had a different view: “There were no tiki bars, so I was free to follow my passion and do something fun and quirky – and I didn’t want to be compared to other places.”

Where others saw weakness, he saw strength – and in 12 years has made the West 25th Street bar a go-to spot for Tiki drinks. In Cleveland, but also the country.

Since 2018, Porco, has received seven Spirit Award nominations by the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Foundation – quite a feat when you consider only nine bars in Ohio have been nominated for one since 2007.

It’s a testament to his love of Tiki culture and mixology – and a DIY spirit.

Says Was: “People would say I’m out on an island, but that’s what I wanted all along.”
