IN THE NEWS
Pete Davidson hits Cleveland for rare, pop-up appearance

The weekend was on autopilot, and the week ahead was all set at Hilarities. Then the call came in…
“Saturday, out of the blue, Pete Davidson’s management called and asked if he could play here,” says owner Nick Kostis. “It’s a great privilege that Pete wants to play Hilarities.”
The actor, long-time SNL cast-member and stand-up comedian will do a rare pop-up performance at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the East Fourth comedy club in Pickwick and Frolic.
“You see comedians like Pete and Louis CK doing things like this in New York and L.A.,” says Kostis. “But you rarely see this here.”
Davidson has no shows scheduled for 2025 and has been largely absent from the stage since a co-headlining appearance with Dave Chappell a year ago. He requires a no-cell-phone policy the times he does appear and he kept a low profile.
He made a surprise appearance in May at the Stand in Manhattan. In June, he did a pop-up at the Pittsburgh Improv and joined Jon Stewart at the Prudential Center in Newark for a one-nighter.
Kostis would only confirm the Thursday show.
But something tells me something’s brewing. Suddenly, Hilarities’ schedule doesn’t list any bookings in its 4th Street Theatre on Friday and Saturday. Hmm…
“We don’t have any prior relationship with Pete and it’s not like he lives here,” says Kostis. “He chose to land in Cleveland and said, ‘call that club’ – and we’re honored to have him.”
Tickets for the Thursday show go on sale today. And watch for more info…

Fredibertos: A unique drive through Mexican cuisine

Photos by John Petkovic and courtesy Fredibertos
For way too long, it seemed like scoring a jug of water in the desert was easier than finding a classic taco stand.
Enter Fredibertos in Slavic Village.
The just-opened drive-thru restaurant offers authentic food with generous portions and low prices. It boasts a menu that’s as wide-ranging as any sit-down spot – various tacos, burritos and enchiladas to go with its signature ‘Super Fries.’
But it’s breakfast that earned a cult following for Fredibertos, which opened in Niles and Austintown last year. There are eight breakfast burritos and seven combo plates served during hours (8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily).
Owner Freddie Davila, who comes from a family of restaurateurs that migrated from Mexico, plans to expand hours to fill a void for early-birds and night owl food seekers.
Judging by the drive-thru lines, Fredibertos is finding a sweet spot in that void.

‘Jaws’ celebrated its 50th anniversary last month. ‘Shark Week’ hits the Discovery Channel in two weeks.
Sandwiched in between them comes Fin Fest.
The Celebration of Sharks & Stingrays opens at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium on Tuesday. It features both creatures in action and interactive exhibits to “build a broader appreciation for the diversity, importance and plight of these elasmobranchs.”
You also get to feed the stingrays and watch the sharks get fed (without sacrificing yourself for the meal). Fin Fest runs through Aug. 8. For a schedule and tickets, go here.

Guitar Riot: A unique boutique for musicians
It was 12 years ago that Cleveland musicians Brent Ferguson and Tim Parnin were talking about their love of guitars and amps when the light came on: ‘Let’s open ‘the best boutique guitar shop between New York and Chicago.’
Crank up Guitar Riot.
Originally located downtown in the Artcraft Building, the shop moved into its new space at 4517 Lorain Avenue in January.
It boasts a showroom full of boutique guitars and amps, as well as dedicated areas for acoustic, vintage gear and customer service. It’s also been a regular stop for touring musicians, from Billy Corgan to Jack White and members of Clutch and Bad Religion.
“We saw the highest uptick of people were buying guitars and amps during COVID – they had money and were spending it,” says Parnin. “A lot of manufacturers struggled when supply opened up and there was all this excess stock.”
Guitar Riot survived and thrived by focusing on its core vision.
“We never wanted to be Guitar Center,” says Parnin. “We stayed focused on amp repairs and doing guitar set-ups and having boutique guitars and amps.”
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
Memphis Kiddie Park opened in 1952 – as ‘kiddielands’ were becoming all the rage in the country. The trend didn’t last long, as many shut down a decade later. Memphis is still going, however, and is the oldest of the few remaining parks of its kind in the U.S.
