The wait is over: Visible Voice brings books, drinks, food & music to Ohio City

It’s a new milestone in the revival of Lorain Avenue.
Visible Voice Books is re-opening in a long-shuttered building that once housed the Lorain Theater.
The 6,000-square-foot complex – three years in the making -- boasts an expanded bookstore, as well as a café, bar, restaurant and 160-capacity performance space.
The décor is homey yet chic. The vibe is welcoming – where you can hang out with a book or to grab a drink, meal or show.
During a Monday preview, owner Dave Ferrante welcomed family, friends and the longtime patrons of the Visible Voice’s Tremont location with a proclamation: “Books. Music. Food. What’s more to life than that?”
Well, there is a bit more: The renewal of an area that was once a dead zone.
Ferrante has rehabbed and developed two other Lorain buildings that house Proof BBQ, Guitar Riot and Free Hearts yoga studio.
The arrival of Visible Voice comes on the heels of the opening of Soho Chicken + Whisky last month. Come Spring, Noble Beast will open its biergarten on Lorain.

Commercial real estate woes hit downtown empire

AI can imagine new realities, but it can’t fix commercial real estate around the country.
The sector has struggled, and a Cleveland operator has found its way in its crosshairs.
Millennia Companies now has three iconic downtown buildings in foreclosure – and it’s facing a crucial refinancing on a fourth.
Last week, the real estate management and investment company was subjected to a foreclosure lawsuit by Ohio Water Development Authority over unpaid debt for 75 Public Square. The circa-1915 luxury apartment building was once the headquarters of the Illuminating Company.
It follows two recent foreclosures on the historic Statler and Centennial (formerly Union Trust) buildings.
Millennia is also seeking to refinance a loan on the 57-story Key Tower, the tallest building in Cleveland that it purchased in 2017 for $231.5 million
The lingering effects of COVID-19, hybrid work models, high interest rates and AI-induced tech layoffs have resulted in high vacancy rates and 30-40% in commercial real estate values.
Millennia also owns the Garfield Building, home to Marble Room.
🏢 What should Cleveland do with all its empty downtown towers?
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas bar mania

They ripped out the goblins. Even the zombies couldn’t survive the apocalypse that wiped out Halloween pop-up bars.
Now, up goes the Yuletide stuff. The rush of Christmas pop-ups has started with three of the most popular in the area:
XMAS Bar at HI 5: The popular East Bank Flats spot is back and looks like the holiday display at Macy’s NYC – with themed cocktails. Info.
Deck the Vault: The stunning maze of ornate rooms in the subterranean bank vaults of The 9 has opened its Christmas pop-up. Info.
Jingle Mingle: Amici’s Halloween pop-up was an over-the-top house of horrors. Its Christmas pop-up take on yuletide that’s just as extravagant. It opens Thursday. Info.
Christmas Corner Bar: The Around the Corner pop-up did it first, four decades ago – and is still one of the biggest over-the-top celebrations of the season. It opens Friday. Info.
The 216 Rundown
Thomas Dolby: Yes, there’s the iconic hit “She Blinded Me with Science.” But the synth-pop pioneer is also on the faculty of Johns Hopkins and has played with David Bowie, Joni Mitchell and Roger Waters. He hits House of Blues 7 p.m. Thursday. Info.
Chris DeVille: The music critic and Columbus resident will discuss his new book, “Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion,” with Cleveland write Annie Zaleski. 7 p.m. Thursday at Mac’s Backs. Info.
“Renaissance to Runway: The Enduring Italian Houses”: The stunning CMA exhibition explores how Italy’s fashion houses were inspired by the Renaissance, Mannerist and early Baroque periods. Open through Feb. 1. Info.

Northeast Ohio son is a Netflix phenomenon
He was an afterthought, even for presidential historians. But James A. Garfield – born in Mentor and buried in Lake View Cemetery – has become a pop phenomenon thanks to hit series by Netflix.
“Death by Lightning” documents his unlikely rise to the White House and his tragic death, at the hand of one of the first documented fame-seeking killers.
Garfield was virulently anti-slavery and earned the rank of major general in the Civil War – and his slow death created a constitutional crisis.
His home in Mentor is open and offers an insightful look into his life. His memorial in Lake View is an awe-inspiring tribute. Don’t miss either.
📺 Be honest — which Cleveland legend deserves their own Netflix series next?
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
