‘Rocky Horror’ at 50: How Cleveland turned a box-office bomb into a cult phenomenon

Critics and the few people that came hated it. The movie was D.O.A., except for a handful of cities like Cleveland… which helped pave its unlikely path to cult phenomenon.

It’s no surprise that city is central to the 50th anniversary celebration of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which includes a screening tonight at Cinemark Valley View.

The 1975 sci-fi camp classic about a mad scientist in rickety heels and ripped fishnets is forever connected to the city – and not just because “The Plain Dealer” is featured it.

Cleveland embraced the film when It opened its initial 11-year run in 1977, at the old Heights Art Theater. After all, the city was one among the first to embrace another a glam-rock, sexually-fluid, space freak… David Bowie.

Raucous midnight showings summoned flamboyant ‘TRHPS’ cults in drag, corsets, nylons, participating in scenes, waving Plain Dealers and tossing rice and toast. The film’s star, Tim Curry, even came to Cleveland to join in one night.

They still do it at the Cedar-Lee, which has hosted campy shebangs on the first Saturday of the month since 1988.

On Saturday, it will celebrate the 50th anniversary with a bash that rolls out “TRHPS” performance troupe Simply His Servants. The Phoenix Theaters in Great Northern Mall will also screen it.

On Oct. 9, a national tour that mixes the film with cast members and live performances and hits the Agora.

Storied building that defined downtown, made history is in foreclosure

For decades, it symbolized Cleveland’s ascent and defined its style. It made history and notoriety

The first meeting of La Cosa Nostra in America took place there, in 1928. The mobsters even posed for a photo and used their real names – bad moves that led to busts.

Countless stars stayed there. Jimi Hendrix did a ‘secret’ show in the basement bar and ended up partying with Leonard Nimoy.

Now, the future of the Statler is up in the air: The 1912 Beaux Arts gem has gone into foreclosure after its owner, Statler Cleveland Holding, LLC, an affiliate of the Millennia Companies, defaulted on its $52 million mortgage, according to a suit filed by Union Labor Life Insurance Company.

The lender demands more than $60 million, including interest and late fees.

Millennia purchased the Statler in 2018 for $40 million to convert its 295 units into high-end apartments. It also owns Key Tower, The Garfield Building, The Centennial, 75 Public Square and acclaimed eateries Marble Room and Il Venetian.

Haunted House of Bars: Beer, burgers & psychotic freaks

Photos by John Petkovic

It started like any other night in the bar, with a beer. Then came an ominous drone, a rattling moan, a howl, a laugh and a bang.

Then the clown burst out of the wall and swung his knives into a wild, evil frenzy.

Egads, the Parmaniacs have outdone themselves at Post and Beam.

Every year, owners Sue and Larry Moran transform the bar into a lair of tomghoulery.

Where else can you kick back with a brewski, some wings and a guy who just had his face snatched by a chain saw?

A lot of bars get dolled up for Halloween. Post and Beam has been going all out since 1998.

Larry Moran always brews up new gadget-powered ghouls, goblins and freaks that make heads turn in the bar – though not exactly like the spinning-top of a clown hanging from the ceiling.

Call it the is the haunted house of bars. I bet that massive spider lording over the roof and the Nosferatu towering over the street would agree.
