Another iconic downtown building faces foreclosure

When it opened in 1924, the Union Trust building was hailed as Cleveland’s temple of commence.
The opulent neo-classical building on Euclid and East Ninth was world’s largest bank lobby and the second-largest office building in the world.
Now called the Centennial Building, it joins the famed Statler building on the road to foreclosure, according to a lawsuit by lender Deutsche Bank
Both owned are owned by Millennia Companies, which defaulted on loans for the iconic buildings.
Centennial was purchased $40 million in 2018 by Millennia, with a $500 million plan to transform it into luxury apartments, a museum and restaurant.
The project stalled – despite Millennia receiving $75 million in grants and $40 million in loans.
As we reported, the Statler — a 1912 Beaux Arts gem – went into foreclosure last month.
Millennia also owns Key Tower, The Garfield Building, 75 Public Square and acclaimed eateries Marble Room and Il Venetian.
Suddenly, the ‘Chablis of coffee’ is all the rage in Cleveland

Photos by John Petkovic
For years, it was easier to find water in the desert than scoring Yemeni coffee in Cleveland.
Now, stylish cafes serving the trendy, deeply flavorful beverage keep popping up. Three opened this year, with another two on the way.
While coffee originated in Ethiopia, it was cultivated and turned into a drink in Yemen.
Renowned for its complex earthiness and tones -- dried fruit, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and pistachio – the ‘Chablis of Coffee’ took off in popularity after Yemeni immigrants opened cafes in Michigan.
The wave has hit Cleveland, thanks to these spots:
The just-opened Qahwah House in North Olmsted is already expanding to Strongsville, in the former Boston Market on Pearl Road.
In April, Shibam opened amid a strip of Arabic eateries in North Olmsted – and will soon open expand to Westlake
In June, Ebreeq Coffee House opened downtown at 200 Public Square.
All boast Arabic music and décor to go with a variety of drinks and delicious pastries like the Honeycomb: small buns featuring cream cheese and honeyed syrup.

Lorain Avenue renaissance continues with Soho
Lorain Avenue was once a dead zone. No more. The street is undergoing a renaissance – thanks to the openings of several shops, bars and restaurants. (Read about it here.)
Soho Chicken + Whiskey is the latest step in the makeover. The bar-restaurant has just opened in the former home of Xinji Noodle Bar.
“We’ve been working hard all summer (and into the fall…) to turn this new space into Soho 2.0 – with the constant goal of making it feel The Same But Better,” said chef-owner Nolan Konkoski.
For 13 years, Soho was the go-to spot for southern cooking and innovative cocktails on West 25th. Chipotle is taking over its old space.
