See it to believe it: A brick ranch transformed into a ghoulish lair

Photos courtesy Haunted Yard

For 11 months a year, it’s a charming brick ranch at the end of a quiet, dead-end street with well-manicured lawns.

Then the ghosts and goblins come out to play in what is one of the area’s spookiest lairs of tomghoulary.

Beware the evening creatures of Haunted Yard.

Brothers Joel and Eric Andexler started their homespun attraction in 1988 – which spans four backyards on Rousseau Drive in Parma.

They’ve paused doing it some year, including 2024. After all, it takes four months to build their maze of mayhem.

Alas, it’s back starting Saturday — 7:30 to 10 p.m. It will be reprised Sunday, and October 23, 26 and 30th.

Don’t mistake this with the inflatable ghosts and witches and skeleton men on front lawns.

Haunted Yard is homemade haunted house with live actors in immaculately gruesome makeup and rags. It takes 20 minute to travail – if you make it, bwahahaha.

The $10 admission benefits Parma Animal Shelter, Stearns Homestead and Parma City Schools.

The CEO vs. the students: WCSB to protest Ideastream talk at City Club

It’s the story of the little radio station that could. And the community loved it – not just for its music and personalities, but also for its heart and passion.

For half a century, student-run college station WCSB was central to the music and arts scene.

Then it all ended when Cleveland State University and Ideastream Public Media colluded to kill the station and a cultural gem in a hostile takeover.

The university struck a deal with Ideastream that allows it to ditch WCSB’s eclectic, engaging programming with a stale jazz rehash.

At 11:30 a.m. today, Ideastream CEO Kevin Martin will appear at the City Club as part of a forum called “The Future of Public Media.”

Outside, WCSB former staff and supporters and alumni have organized a protest in front of the City Club. Should be interesting.

Ice battles? Wacky Promotions? Here come the Monsters

Yes, there are the goals – but also bruising fights and some of the wackiest promotions in sports.

The Cleveland Monsters have developed a cult following for all three and will get going with a new season of ice battles and themed nights.

The AHL hockey affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets will drop the puck on its home opener at 7 tonight against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. They’ll face each other again at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Rocket Arena. Info.

Now, the promotions: The team will transform into Cleveland Polish Boys – where they wear, yes, jerseys featuring the sausage sandwich. (Last year, they played as the Pierogis.)

They’ll also don Superman jerseys, host a concert by the Sugarhill Gang and roll out country and emo nights.

Throughout the season, the Monsters will honor local hockey history. That story starts with the Cleveland Indians in 1929 – yes, that was the name of the first team. In 1937, they became the Barons -- who played in different incarnations, including in the NHL.
