It’s National Pierogi Day and Rudy’s Strudel wants to party

Immigrants came to work in steel mills, and they arrived with dreams of a new life.
They also brought a piece of the Old World with them: Recipes for that pillowy treat: Pierogi.
“Pierogis tell the story of Cleveland,” says Lidia Trempe, aka “The Pierogi Queen” and owner of Rudy’s Strudel. “Immigrants came to America during waves that started before World War I and continued after World War II.”
Chef Michael Symon started serving pierogi in 2002 – and made them staples in fine dining restaurants.
At 11 a.m. today, the Parma bakery will celebrate National Pierogi Day with a party that honors the ubiquitous dumpling and its beloved role in Cleveland cuisine.
Trempe will roll out a pierogi buffet that features five music-themed treats, including the, uh, “Kate Bush.”
Rudy’s, you see, shares space with The Current Year record shop. In 2022, a worker went to change the sign to reflect a new batch of pierogi and some new Kate Bush albums.
“A photo of it went viral on social media, with one million views,” “says Trempe. “So, I made one, featuring mushrooms, carrots, onions, soy sauce and cream cheese.”
The Current Year will participate in the party, to celebrate its fifth anniversary.

Protesters condemn CSU, Ideastream’s hostile takeover of WCSB

They lost their radio station, but they won’t back down.
On Tuesday, more than 200 staff, alumni and fans of WCSB protested at Cleveland State University against the hostile takeover of the station by Ideastream.
Protesters carried signs that read: “CSU I WANT MY MUSIC BACK” and “YOU CAN’T PUT STUDENTS FIRST WHILE PUTTING THEIR VOICES LAST.”
“Everybody was processing what the next steps are and if the station can be saved,” says John Skrtic, who attended the protest. “It’s such a loss for the community.”
On Friday, the media group and CSU announced that WCSB would cease operations.
Ideastream and CSU colluded to kill WCSB, a student-run cultural jewel that was central to the music and arts scenes for half a century.
Staff members were given no advance notice of the takeover and were forced to leave the station -- without being able to take their personal belongings and albums.
The hostile takeover has created an intense backlash from listeners, including Cleveland Council members Kris Harsh and Mike Polensek. More info on the story here.
They will make you pay: Browns’ tickets to cost a lot more in 2029

“Who’s going to pay for this?” That’s been a central question in the debate over the Browns $2.4 billion domed stadium in Brook Park.
The answer, as it turns out, is you.
“The average ticket will be over $200 plus food and beverage, so we want (fans) when (they come) to a game to have a great time and say, ‘You know, that was a lot but it was worth it, and I want to do it again,’” said owner Jimmy Haslam, in an interview with Associated Press.
Current prices for a ticket start at $70 and the average price is $170 to $180, when premium seats are factored in.
The team has started construction on the 67,000-seat stadium early next year, with the goal of playing there in 2029.
