The repeated stabbings and grisly savagery seemed like obvious clues. Way too obvious for one of the most twisted murder mysteries in decades.
As it turned out, the 2013 death of Aliza Sherman was anything but a crime of passion. There was no jealousy and hate. It was a crime of professional incompetence.
According to a Cuyahoga Country indictment, Sherman was murdered because her divorce lawyer, Gregory Moore, wanted to avoid having to go to trial because he wasn’t prepared for the case.
Moore, a Sagamore Hills resident, had been staying with relatives in Texas when he was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on May 2.
He has officially been extradited to Ohio and is now sitting in Cuyahoga County jail -- and is expected to be arraigned today in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Moore faces 10 charges in connection with her death, including aggravated murder and conspiracy.
According to the indictment, Moore wanted to make Sherman “unavailable” to avoid the trial going forward -- and either was, or conspired with, a ‘hooded figure dressed in black’ who murdered Sherman in broad daylight at Erieview Plaza.
It alleges that the Cleveland Clinic fertility nurse was lured to the location under false pretenses, after he had concocted the scheme months earlier to kidnap her to avoid having her try her case go to court.
“Digital fingerprints” from cell phones and WiFi use helped crack a case that frustrated investigators for more than a decade.
The shocking murder and bizarre motive has made the Sherman murder a national story.

The ship that built Cleveland has turned 100.
The Great Lakes Science Center is celebrating the centennial of the Steamship William G. Mather – one of Cleveland’s most unique attractions -- with a series of tours and exhibitions.
Built and launched in 1925, the 618-foot flagship for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. (now Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.) was the workhorse of the Great Lakes, hauling iron ore from Duluth, Minnesota to Cleveland.
It was one of the heroes of World War II, when it served as an icebreaker and led convoys through the frozen Great Lakes and played a key role in Midwest’s industrial support of the war effort.
Retired in 1980, the freighter was left for dead in Toledo and seemed destined for the scrap yards – until it was brought to Cleveland in 1987 and given a new life as a museum three years later.
The Science Center, which purchased the ship in 2006, will host a variety of tours that explore the elegant quarters, sprawling decks and engineering breakthroughs of the freighter that fueled the rise of Cleveland.
The museum also boasts an indoor exhibit, Steam & Steel: Propelling the Future of the Great Lakes, that features interactive displays, historic artifacts and hands-on activities that highlight the ship’s storied legacy. More info here.

Akron’s claim as the Hamburger Capital of the World goes back to 1885, when Charles Menches is said to have created the first burger. It’s no doubt amplified by Swensons – the legendary drive-in burger spot that delighted generations of Akronites from 1935, and has gone on to dominate the area burger scene.
Count Cordelia chef, James Beard Award finalist and Akron native Vinnie Cimino among them.
“Growing up in Akron, Swensons wasn’t just a restaurant,” said Cimino in a press release. “It was woven into the fabric of my childhood memories.”
So, it’s no surprise that the Beard chef would collaborate with the fast-food legend.
Throughout June, Swensons will feature Cimino’s Pimento Burger and Kool-Aid Pickles and Pimento Cheese with Saltines in area locations. In turn, Cordelia will serve Swensons-inspired dishes such as a Galley Boy Tartare and Banana Ice Cream with Peanut Butter Swirl.
It kicks off June 1 with Cimino and his crew working as curb-servers at Swensons West Akron (40 S. Hawkins Ave.) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And while we’re digging into Akron burger lore… Remember: “Everything on it” is much sparser than it sounds. In Akron, you get mustard, onions and pickles. And no ketchup.
Ohio Pie had a ‘quiet opening’ – no advance notice, no announcement – to tease the opening of its third location. But that didn’t stop fans from swarming the beloved pizzeria. Read about the opening here.
The Wedding Present defined England’s indie sound in the 1980s and ‘90s with its driving, jangly and noisy brand of post-punk pop. Its “Bizarro” album is seen as a touchstone of the scene and era. At 8 tonight, the band will bring its ‘Bizarro’ 35th anniversary tour to the Grog Shop. Info.
It’s been quite a 40th anniversary celebration for Hilarities at Pickwick and Frolic. The 4th Street Theater of the comedy club and restaurant complex has been booked solid all May and it will end with a bang. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Cy Amundson will bring his comedic story-telling and hard-hitting punchlines to the club with a three-night, four-show stint. Info here.

Yeah, there are the sales – over 45 million. But Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ is more than one of rock’s best-sellers. It’s the one album that never leaves.
It spent a record 736 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts after it was released in 1973. It dropped off in 1988, only to bounce in and out ever since, and eclipse 1,000 weeks.
To mark its 50th anniversary, a 42-minute “Dark Side of the Moon” audiovisual show toured planetariums in 2023 – including a five-week stint at the Shafran in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Tickets were so hot that the show was extended 10 more weeks.
Well, it’s back again.
The cosmic show features the opus played in surround sound along to interstellar images that were created in collaboration with Floyd art designer Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis. Each song is presented with a different visual theme; some songs provide a look into the future, while others are a retro salute to the band’s iconic imagery.
The run ends Aug. 31 – until it returns again in two, or 20, years. More info here.
Cleveland, 1959: A mugshot of Danny Greene in 1959. The notorious Irish American mobster took part in a 1970s gang war to control Cleveland’s criminal operations. In 1976 alone, there were allegedly 36 bombs set off by competing gangsters, helping the city earn the moniker, Bomb City, U.S.A. On October 6, 1977, Greene was killed when his car exploded after a dental appointment in Lyndhurst.
