First look: Ohio Pie hits ground running as pizza cult flocks to Parma

Photos by John Petkovic

The OPEN sign popped on. The dough came out. The oven fired up.

The first customer arrived five minutes later. Then word got out on social media, and the cult was activated... The place was running low of dough by late Friday afternoon.

Ohio Pie is growing by the slice and now, by location – with its just-opened third shop in Parma (6847 Ridge Road.)

“We didn’t make an announcement,” says owner Nick Robson, who worked the counter and the crowd on Saturday. “People just started posting about it on social media and the phone started ringing.”

Robson, who founded Ohio Pie in 2019 with business partner Aaron Sechrist, had to snatch dough from its Rocky River shop to satisfy the rush.

He also took orders and offered free magnets to customers as they scanned the Parma-inspired murals on the walls. Check out TV legends Ghoulardi and Big Chuck; Parmaniac punks Jim Konya and Tony Erba; pink flamingos and bowling pins.

“I was looking for a third location for two years and Parma is the perfect place,” says Robson. “It’s an old-school city with personality.”

Old-school personality is key to spawning the cult of Ohio Pie.

The beloved pizzeria is brash enough to declare its medium-crust pizza covered with a generous spread of toppings “Ohio Style.” It’s square cut, the cheese runs edge to edge and the sauce goes over the cheese.

Ohio Pie boasts build-your-own and specialty pizzas – as well as weekend brunch pies topped with eggs, bacon and potatoes on an ‘everything bagel’ crust.

It’s more than flavors that have made Ohio Pie a cult fetish, however.

“I don’t go around telling people are pizza is great,” says Robson, as he hands boxes of freshly made pizzas to customers and proceeds to open the door for them. “We have fun, try cool things and treat people well – and hope they tell people about us.”

Lake Cemetery honors the fallen, offers beautiful stroll through time

Photos courtesy Lake View Cemetery

Yes, the intricate tombstones and striking monuments are eye candy. But Lake View is more than a cemetery. It’s a natural and supernatural wonder that tells the story and embodies the spirit of Cleveland.

Both will be in attendance when Lake View celebrates Memorial Day.

At 10:30 a.m. today, the event will honor 9,000 service members laid to rest at Lake View, including its first resident: Civil War Capt. Louis Germain DeForest.

It takes place at the monument for James A. Garfield (who spoke at the first celebration of holiday in 1868 – back when it was called Decoration Day and the future president was a general).

It’s one of Lake View’s most popular events, with flags at the graves of all vets. It also offers visitors a chance to explore one of the area’s most beautiful spots.

Check it out:

  • A beautiful park: Established in 1869, Lake View occupies 285 acres and was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. It was designed to be a park as much as a cemetery.

  • Cleveland legends: Many of its 102,000 residents made history, including industrialist John D. Rockefeller, 1930s crime-buster Eliot Ness, traffic light and gas mask inventor Garrett Morgan, comic book pioneer Harvey Pekar, and rock ‘n’ roll godfather Alan Freed.

  • Baseball tragedy: It’s home to Ray Chapman. the Cleveland Indians shortstop who died from a fractured skull after being beaned by a pitch in New York, 1920.

  • Natural wonder: It features over 300 species of woody plants and 7 designated Moses Cleveland Trees, trees which purportedly were growing in 1796 when Moses Cleveland founded the city.

  • Wade Memorial Chapel: A 1901 Greek Revival structure consists of magnificent stained-glass windows and mosaics honoring industrialist Jeptha H. Wade.

  • The Haserot Crying Angel: The bronze angel, sculpted in 1924, guards the grave of Frances Henry Haserot and is one of the top attractions for Goth photo shoots.

Guardians face world-champ Dodgers as roster moves loom

The Guardians hit the one-third mark of the season when the Los Angeles Dodgers come to Progressive Field -- 6:10 tonight. It’s the start of a three-game series and the only visit of the reigning champs.

It’s also a chance to take an inventory of what has been a frustrating season thus far.

Yes, the Guards would make the playoffs if the season ended today. They’ve won four out of five games, including three out of four against the AL-leading Tigers.

But consistency has been rare and there are more questions than answers. The Guardians will be forced to confront them soon:

  • Starter Ben Lively is out for the season with Tommy John surgery. Slade Cecconi, the highly touted prospect the Guardians acquired in the Josh Naylor, has looked sharp so far. Can he steady the rotation?

  • The team could use David Fry’s bat when he’s eligible to return from injury in early June. He’ll be relegated to playing DH the rest of the season, however, and will compete for time with Carlos Santana and Kyle Manzardo.

  • Outfield prospect Chase DeLauter has battled injuries since being drafted in 2022. He’s on the mend from hernia surgery… Can he finally stay healthy and fill a big hole in right?

  • Centerfielder Lane Thomas is back from injury. Meanwhile, Minor league slugger C.J. Kayfus — normally a first baseman — has been playing in the outfield of late. The outfield has been weak and the team knows it needs to improve ASAP.

Memorial Day party on the lake — with dogs, sweet views & classic rock

The sun is more enticing at Whiskey Island Still and Eatery than the glitzy decor of most snazz pads or a zillion beer taps. Just ask any of the dogs lounging around, lapping up a lazy afternoon. Today, the outdoor venue that overlooks the lake in Wendy Park will host a Memorial Day party.  Classic-rock cover band Custard Pie plays 2-4 p.m. and the sun sets around 8:50 p.m.

Let there be rock: Cleveland celebrates return of AC/DC

It’ll be the 21st time that AC/DC has played Cleveland when it pulls up to Huntington Back Field on Wednesday. Tickets here.

It’s also the Aussie rockers’ first show here in 8 ½ years and a far cry from its debut here in 1977, when they opened for Michael Stanley Band.

On Tuesday, the House of Blues will mark the appearance by transforming into High Voltage – a pop-up store that will feature merch, host a fan meet-up and display AC/DC stage props. It runs noon to 10 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Also, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will celebrate AC/DC Fan Day by playing the band’s music, showing clips and displaying outfits and props.
