Cleveland’s most haunted: Real places where ghosts roam (and they aren’t actors)

Photos by John Petkovic and courtesy places mentioned
Welcome to the houses of the unholy – where unsettled souls lord over buildings that attract ghost hunters and paranormal fascinations.
They aren’t the seasonal spectacles of screaming actors and fog machines, but real structures that stand as silent witnesses to lives cut short and mysteries unsolved.
Here are four — and they all host spirited tours:
House of Wills: The former funeral home is known as the haunted, creepy space with a mysterious name. Its reputation stems from its abrupt closing in 2005 – and is amplified by its decayed opulence. The owner of the building hosts tours Friday and Saturday. Info.
Midwest Railway Preservation Society: The collection of old, weathered trains boast the “death car” where 26 passengers were boiled alive in a tragic 1943 accident. The train remains unscathed, along with dozens of others of another era. Info.
Franklin Castle: Built in 1881 by industrialist Hannes Tiedemann, the four-story stone mansion is full of ghastly, ghostly legend. Several of Tiedemann's children died here under mysterious circumstances – and it’s said to be the scene of a massacre at a Socialist party meeting in the ‘30s. Info.
Squire's Castle: Built in the 1890s and abandoned since 1922, the castle is said to be haunted by Mrs. Squire – who roams the ruins with a glowing red lantern in hand when the moon comes out. Info.
Break out Beethoven: Cleveland Orchestra brings beloved piece to Severance

Fall is in full force and it’s that time of the year – when the Cleveland Orchestra rolls out Ludvig van Beethoven.
His Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 – beloved for its choral finale featuring "Ode to Joy" – has been a staple for band’s fall season and is the highlight of performances at Severance Music
The Cleveland Orchestra's first performance of Beethoven's Ninth occurred in 1931, at Gray's Armory, its first music director, Nikolai Sokoloff.
The piece gained prominence with performances and recordings under directors George Szell and Lorin Maazel.
“Ode to Joy” inspired Clevelanders when musicians recorded a virtual performance during COVID-19.
Cleveland Orchestra will perform the work at Severance Music Center Thursday through Sunday. Info.
It’s unanimous: City Council condemns hostile takeover of WCSB

Cleveland State University and Ideastream Public Media colluding to kill WCSB isn’t playing out like smooth jazz.
In an emotional, fiery session, Cleveland City Council unanimously passed an emergency resolution supporting students and members of the radio station – which has been central to the city’s cultural scene.
Council members Kris Harsh, Rebecca Maurer, Lauren Welch and Mike Polensek sponsored the resolution, which condemned the hostile takeover of WCSB.
“You can go from bluegrass to reggae to hip hop, you can go over to jazz, and then you can end up in metal, all within a four-hour block. And it was a beautiful community that they built for 50 years,” proclaimed Harsh.
The 216 Rundown
Rock ‘n’ roll, Mark Twain and a cemetery: Five things, two days
Cage the Elephant: The bluesy Kentucky natives bring classic rock into the 21st century. At 6 tonight, they pull up to the Agora. Info.
Los Straitjackets: They mix surf rock and raw rock ‘n’ roll and they wear those trademark Lucha Libre wrestling masks. At 7 tonight, they hit the Beachland Ballroom. Info.
Steel Panther: Break out the Bics. The neo-hair-metal rogues bring the Sunset Strip to MGM Northfield Park. 7:30 Thursday. Info.
Mark Twain Tonight: Richard Thomas brings the ghost – and the writings and wit – of America’s great author to Connor Palace in Playhouse Square. 7 p.m. Thursday. Info.
Buried History Days: The tour of Erie Street Cemetery will reveal to the legends its esteemed residents, including Meskwaki tribe chief Joc-O-Sot. 6 p.m. Thursday. Info.

Galley Boys and the Cavs? Deal.
Will LeBron be too stuffed to play when the Lakers hit Cleveland on Jan. 28 to take on the Cavs?
His favorite hamburger joint, Swensons, will open two locations in Rocket Arena on its street and Loudville level concourses.
It will serve its famous Galley Boys, Potato Teezers, fries and shakes and will host an in-arena promotion: anytime an opposing team misses two consecutive free throws, fans will get free Potato Teezers at Swensons locations the day after the game. More here.
