Raise a glass to summer: Cleveland’s top 10 bar patios

August is here, we’re deep into summer and the weather is cooling down – which is fine for a drink at some of Cleveland’s finest bar patios. Raise a glass to these 10:

All Saints Public House: This leafy patio feels like a park in the city with a vibe that's laid-back yet lively.

Bar 32: The views stir the drink on the 32nd floor of the downtown Hilton. Stellar shots of the skyline, Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River.

Collision Bend: Located in the 19th-century building that once housed the storied Watermark. Timeless views of the Flats.

Edison’s Pub: A picnic-table party that’s fun and hip with an “everybody’s welcome” attitude.

Forest City Brewery: It feels like picnic time in an enchanted forest.

Merwin's Wharf: This sprawling patio along the Cuyahoga sits amid a unique mix of industry and nature, old bridges and wild greenery. Great views.

Old 86: Low-frill rock ‘n’ roll bar in Detroit-Shoreway with a long, narrow patio and a garage bar that makes for a night in the city.

Prosperity Social Club: The patio at this Tremont mainstay feels like a backyard party, with retro décor and a vibe that is anything but exclusive.

Stone Mad: The pub feels like Ireland and the patio is maddening — constructed out of stone tables, meticulous masonry and that fireplace.

Treehouse: The big toucan mural says, “Lovely day for a Guinness.” True, especially on this leafy and lively patio.

Let’s get weird: A bash for lovers of all things strange

When the going gets weird, the weird get going.

Step right up, you freaks and geeks. World Oddities Expo is hitting Huntington Convention Center for a weekend of weirdness. Saturday and Sunday.

It’s a macabre traveling circus loaded with sword swallowers, fire breathers, supernatural performers and lovers of all things strange.

Back for its third year, WOD rolls out vendors, live entertainment, mystics, animal anomalies, tattooed wonders, taxidermists and peculiar jewelry. More info.

Cleveland Clinic drops in heart surgery ranking

For decades, the Cleveland Clinic has been a mainstay on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals rankings. And there is yet again on the publication’s just-released Top 20 Honor Roll.

But for the first time in three decades, the hospital has ceded the No. 1 ranking for best cardiology, heart and vascular surgery in the U.S. It’s now third behind New York City's NYU Langone Hospitals and Mount Sinai Hospital.

The Clinic finished in the top 10 in a variety of specialties, including rheumatology (second) and gastroenterology (third).

So, why did the Guardians trade Shane Bieber?

Cleveland has traded star pitchers before – Cory Kluber, Mike Clevinger – and received hauls of young talent in return. It hopes to strike gold again with the trade of Shane Bieber to the Blue Jays.

What are the Guardians doing:

  • They didn’t trade Kwan, a sign that they aren’t tearing it down for a rebuild.

  • The team received right-handed pitching prospect Khal Stephen for Bieber -- who has been attempting a comeback after having Tommy John surgery in April 2024.

  • Stephen, 22, was the fifth best prospect for the Blue Jays and is now the Guardians’ top-rated pitching prospect. His big-league ETA is 2026.

  • Bieber hasn't pitched this year or a full season in three years.

  • Fans will no doubt miss Bieber, but the team saw a fast-rising prospect whose pitching profile is similar Bieber’s when he was 22.

The 216 Rundown

Yo, flappers and fellas: Let’s get Gatsby

It’s been 100 years since F. Scott Fitzgerald published ‘The Great Gatsby’… so let’s celebrate with a Roaring Twenties party. At 6 tonight, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s monthly MIX party will roll out jazz, dancing, themed cocktails and burlesque performers. Attendees are encouraged to get glitzy and glamorous – and can check out its new exhibition, Rose Iron Works and Art Deco. Info.

Now he’s really a Man of Steel

Our favorite superhero son is literally a Man of Steel. At 11 a.m. Saturday, the city will celebrate the unveiling of Siegel and Shuster Superman Plaza at Huntington Convention Center. The monument features a stainless-steel statue of Superman, as well as sculptures of Siegel, Shuster and Joanne Siegel (who inspired Lois Lane), and a phone booth. Info.

Celebrate the scene, dance to the music

Cleveland Rocks: Past, Present, Future celebrates the music scene – by, as the name suggests, taking the past and blending it with the present to chart a future.  At 7 tonight, it brings its Waterloo Makes Music series to Waterloo Tower Stage in Collinwood. Hello! 3D brings cumbia-psych dance party. Da Land Brass Band brings its brand of New Orleans funk. More info.
