Cleveland’s Ghost Signs: A Century of Faded Glory Still Haunts the Walls

Photos by John Petkovic

You see the new townhouses, Sherwin-Williams HQ, Rock Hall expansion. Then, to the right of the Shoreway:

“You’ll Prefer GOLD BOND The Special BEER.”

The gold, black and red painted sign has covered the brick wall on this West Third Street building for almost a century.

Faded yet brilliant, it harkens back to the long-gone Cleveland-Sandusky Brewing Co.

Like so many ghost signs, it’s a haunting marker of time that shows where we’ve been and where we're going.

Cleveland is a treasure trove of ghost signs, and it makes for a colorful trip through urban archeology.

Ohio City: A treasure of such gems – including the circa-1895 Van Rooy Coffee Co. (2900 Detroit Avenue) and Uneeda Biscuit (West 32nd and Bridge).

Slavic Village: Several signs, including Mail Pouch tobacco (Broadway Ave.) and CHEW HONEST SCRAP (East 49th & Broadway).

East Side: The long-gone car company Packard (5200 Prospect), Buckeye Ribbon & Carbon Co. (St. Clair and East 72nd), Cleveland Cooperative Stove Co. (East 67th Street and Central), Richman Brothers (East 55th).

West Side: Detroit and Lorain Avenues boast a ton, including the 7up sign on Detroit and West 80th .

Parma: The city boasts elaborate hand-painted signs, old and new, including two gems: Homuth's ghost sign (5729 Ridge) and Parma Cleaners (6133 Ridge).

There are many more.

You don’t need a map. Just explore the bones of the city and keep your eyes open.

Browns Replay: Heart-Stopping Wins Echo 1980 Kardiac Kids

Cleveland Browns

The Browns pull out yet another crazy last-second win…

Wait, what year is this?

2026 or 1980 — when the “Kardiac Kids” went on a streak of dramatic wins 46 years ago?

We’re seeing history repeating itself in 2026, and the parallels to that historic season are remarkable.

Sunday’s dramatic win over the Titans, 27-24, was the fifth time QB Deshaun Watson has led a game-winning drive this season.

The last time that happened? 1980, when QB Brian Sipe did it seven times.

The 2026 Kardiac Kids featured clutch receptions from Harold Fannin Jr. and KC Concepcion and hard running by Quinshon Judkins.

The Browns are now 5-2 and in first place.

Their point differential is minus-13.

Four of their last five games have been decided by three points.

In 1980, 13 of 17 contests were decided by a touchdown or less; eight by a field goal or less.

Fans lived on the edge every then.

They’re doing it again — and they’re loving every second of it.

The Crumbl of Bagels? PopUp Opens with Long Lines, Hype, Overpriced Ambitions

PopUp Bagels

Hand-scrawl font. No-frills. Underdog branding.

And it’s all paired with a savvy social-media campaign.

Dozens waited on Friday to get a taste of PopUp Bagels -- the fast-growing chain that opened its first Ohio location in Woodmere.

It sells hot, whole bagels alongside cream cheese – $42 for a dozen and two "schmears.”

It’s part of a “Grip, Rip and Dip” ritual and social-media campaign.

Note: The location is permanent, not a pop-up. And PopUp isn’t “indie”:

  • It’s the product of a branding campaign polished by investors.

  • PopUp is backed by Tiger Global, the firm whose $24 billion portfolio is dominated by big tech.

  • ‘Not famous but known’ is the slogan, but it has lured the famous to invest – from Paul Rudd to Michael Strahan.

  • The no-frills approach fits the “pop-up” energy while maximizing margins in ways most indie shops rarely do.

  • The focus on viral over baking content drives aggressive expansion: 100 stores by the end of 2027, hundreds more longer-term.

  • It replicates the Crumbl playbook: humble origin story; “indie” branding; hedge funds; celebrities, rapid expansion.

But Crumbl’s long lines are long gone.

The crumbling cookie chain closed several stores here and 57 in the country due to declining foot-traffic and sales.

So, is PopUp destined to be the Crumbl of bagels?

Check out five real-deal Cleveland bagel spots below…

PopUp Bagels Brings Buzz. These Cleveland Classics Own the Game

Long lines and hype surround the opening of “indie” chain PopUp Bagels. But Cleveland has a long tradition of bagel making. There are several local spots that excel at the doughy delight.

Here are five:

Bialy’s (University Heights): A Cleveland institution since 1966, when Brooklyn-born baker Terry Skolnick opened the shop. It has expanded the menu to include sandwiches.

Cleveland Bagel Co. (various locations): Fresh bagels, fair prices – with an array of unique flavors and sandwiches that redefine the dense, chewy delight.

Cocky’s (various locations): Started as a food truck, it rolls out creative, loaded bagel sandwiches that make it a popular breakfast and lunch spot.

Davis Bakery (Woodmere, Warrensville Hts.): Founded in 1939, it serves history, deli classics, stellar rye bread and pastries alongside the bagels.

Nubeigel (Cleveland Heights): It’s developed a dedicated following for its just-baked approach. If you like onions, olives and capers, Nu has a bagel for you.

VINTAGE CLEVELAND

The Torso Killer remains one of America's first modern serial killers. Between 1935 and 1938, the bodies of seven men and five women were discovered in and near Kingsbury Run. Heads were cut off with surgical precision, a modern psycho killer. Enter crime-fighting legend Eliot Ness, a media frenzy and a crime that was never solved.
