The Unsinkable Ship’s Secrets Surface at Great Lakes Science Center

The romance and the film. Mystery and tragedy. The hubris of “The Unsinkable Ship.”

“There are so many reasons why people are fascinated with the Titanic,” says William Katzman, vice president for exhibits at the Great Lakes Science Center. Info.

“They want to know what happened and always end up asking, ‘Who were these people on the ship?”

Soon enough, they’ll get answers: On May 21, the Science Center will open “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.”

It features over 200 authentic artifacts, room recreations, a touchable piece of the hull, and a VR experience and an immersive film.

On April 10, 1912, the maiden and only voyage of the RMS Titanic departed Southampton, England, for New York City with 2,200 passengers.

The luxury ship struck an iceberg on April 14 and sank the next day.

“It’s fascinating that the ship wasn’t discovered until 1985,” says Katzman. “It was a mystery for 78 years and then came all these clues – artifacts that tell the story of its passengers.”

The exhibition offers a glimpse of the voyage, but also the era.

“It’s a gilded past where the price of a first-class suite was $2,500 [$85,000 today],” he says. “It was also a different time in culture.”

The Titanic predated World War I and II – the defining events of the 20th century.

“It’s also story of human hubris,” says Katzman. “We’ve seen many times with our belief in technology – and here we have an ‘unsinkable ship’ that nature knocked down to the bottom of the ocean.”

No Brunch? No reservations? Last-minute Ideas to Make Mom’s Day

You don’t need brunch to say, ‘I love you.’  She’d probably rather spend the day together. Here are some last-minute, low-cost ideas:

Mother's Day at the Zoo: Moms get in for free at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo – where 3,000 animals will be part of your extended family. The zoo will also spotlight resident animal moms and their kids. Info.

Walk around Little Italy: Take mom for a stroll through one of Cleveland’s most charming areas, then hit one of the Mayfield Road restaurants and bakeries for pizza, cannoli, cake and espresso. Info.

Cleveland Museum of Art: Have an artful time checking out the galleries and the atrium, grab a bite in the Provence Café – then head to Wade Lagoon for photos. Info.

Cleveland Botanical Garden: The flowers are in full bloom and the 10 acres of gardens make for a perfect family stroll – especially the Hershey Children’s gardens. Info.

Lake View Cemetery: The sprawling resting place of famous Clevelanders and the Haserot Angel is especially beautiful this time of year. And don’t forget Daffodil Hill. Info.

Same Wall, Same Results: Cavs Bang Heads Against Detroit’s Defense

Donovan Mitchell picked up his game. Jarrett Allen chipped in. Dennis Schroder and Jaylon Tyson brought energy and toughness in spurts.

But it wasn’t enough, as the Cavs lost Game 2 against the Pistons, 107-97.

Cleveland started with the same lethargy that has plagued the team throughout the playoffs.

For the first straight game, the Cavs faced a double-digit deficit in the first quarter.

You could point to James Harden’s four turnovers and three field goals – the 30th time he’s had more turnovers than baskets in the playoffs.

Or Evan Mobley, who had only 9 points and, worse, one rebound. He was outmuscled on both ends of the floor, even against smaller players.

After taking a two-point lead early in the fourth, the Cavs were exposed.

Detroit’s half-court defense is too good to just walk the ball up and take contested shots because there’s no ball movement of floor spacing.

They’re banging their heads against the same wall expecting different results.

Disco is Back: Good Night John Boy Reopens in the Flats

The East Bank Flats was hammered with closings last year – Big Bang Dueling Pianos, Beerhead, Rumrunners, Inferno and Margaritaville.

Just in time for this year’s high season comes the re-opening of Good Night John Boy.

Today, the 1970s-themed disco club, which closed in January, re-opens in the old Jade Steak and Sushi spot in the Flats -- along the river, next to woohoo country bar, Welcome to the Farm.

The new spot will feature a rock ‘n’ roll-themed shots bar dubbed Pour Lolas, as well as a new sound and lighting system, and an expanded kitchen.
