IN THE NEWS
Motorcycle daredevils, animals, wild rides & more… Here comes the fair

The demolition derby and tractor pulls are a summer highlight to fans of mashed metal and growling machines. The rides and elephant ears are a carnival of thrills. The animals not only crow, bleat and wiggle their ears; they’re also star-studded entertainers.
And there’s more, more, more… Roll out the Cuyahoga County Fair -- which opens Tuesday and runs through Sunday.
The 128th edition, which is expected to attract more than 200,000 people, features more of everything, old and new. Yes, you get pig and horse races, canine stunts, ribbon contests for bunnies and roosters and human tricks like jugglers, fire breathers and bands.
The fair has added the Hurricane Roller Coaster and Drop Zone ‘mega rides’ to its amusement area – to go with pro wrestling and the crazy motorcycle stunts of Fearless Flores Thrill Show.
Personal fave? Stare-downs with those intense, colorful roosters. More info.
Salad days: Chopt Ohio debut in Westlake, Woodmere

Photos courtesy Chopt, Eton and City of Westlake
It started as a small salad spot opened by two college students in Union Square in New York City in 2001. It proceeded to develop a cult following and expand to over 70 locations around the East Coast and South.
Now, Chopt Creative Salad Co. will make its Ohio debut when it opens two area locations.
On Wednesday, the fast-casual restaurant known for its craft-your-own salads, wraps and warm grain bowls will host a private sneak-peak of its Crocker Commons location in Westlake that doubles as a fundraiser for Children’s Hunger Alliance. The grand opening is Thursday.
Chop opens its East Side location later this month at Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere. It will feature inside and outside seating. Like the Westlake location, it accommodates online and app orders.
Cleveland housing hangs tough amid warning signs

Just a year ago, buyers rushed to open houses with checkbooks ready and a zeal to bid up prices. Those days are over.
Prices have fallen in the country’s hottest markets and are showing a year-over-year decline. Houses are taking longer to sell. And supply is increasing, with motivated sellers dropping prices.
And yet, Cleveland is hanging despite ominous signs of a housing slowdown and a broader recession.
Resilient market: The metro area has seen a 15% year-over-year increase in home prices – the top spot in the country.
Relative affordability: Despite rising prices, Cleveland is considered a bargain with the second-lowest median home price in the country.
Low inventory: For decades, there were fewer houses built here versus other markets – which is why the average home is 65 years vs. the national average of 36 years.

Laufey: From TikTok to Cleveland Orchestra
Laufey has become an international sensation with her ethereal vocals and innovative fusion of jazz, pop and classical. The Icelander is one of few artists that has managed to become a star on social media and in the jazz and classical worlds.
Her Grammy-winning album, Bewitched, showcases her emotive storytelling and draws inspiration from icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker.
On Thursday, she’ll perform at Blossom Music Center with the Cleveland Orchestra. Info.
“My goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation through a more accessible road,” Laufey says. "There are very few examples of artists who are on stage with an orchestra one day and making TikToks the next."
Due to high ticket sales, Blossom is prohibiting outside alcohol, large bags and elaborate picnics. Personal lawn chairs and one 20-ounce bottle of water per person are allowed.
