Mayor’s “Safeguards” Address Backfires as Data Center Backlash Explodes

“Safeguards.”

It’s become the favored political cliché on issues that are more popular with corporations than people – especially when it comes to data centers.

Enter Lakeland Equity Group.

The Westlake-based developer filed plans for a $1.6 billion hyperscale data center in Slavic Village.

The 300,000 square-foot facility would consume 150 megawatts a day, enough to power 100,000 homes.

The announcement inspired a petition campaign to stop its building.

Meanwhile, Cleveland Councilman Charles Slife has proposed a one-year moratorium on for data centers.

Mayor Bibb took to Instagram to address the issue by invoking “safeguards.”

“Look, as our city grows and technology changes, we’re going to keep seeing new kinds of development come our way,” he said.

“We are doing the work right now to make sure we have strong policies and real safeguards in place to protect our environment and address rising utility costs because this has to work for you.”

Seven-hundred-twenty-one comments. Almost all negative.

It underscores how divisive issue has become – and not between right and left.

It’s politicians and corporations vs. the public.

Wholesale electricity costs have risen by 267% compared to five years ago in areas near significant data center activity.

Last summer, they accounted for a 10-15% increase in Northeast Ohio electricity bills.

Data centers tax our bills, grid and Lake Erie. Opposition to them is uniting people of all backgrounds.

So, what are the “safeguards”?

Tulip Chairs, Mod Style, Killer Cocktails: Discover Cleveland’s Snazziest  Basement Hideaway

It’s tucked away in a basement. Rarely open. And off the radar for most denizens of the nightlife.

Raise a glass to most stylish of secret bars in Cleveland… Kevin’s Martini Bar.

Located in the Pickwick and Frolic entertainment complex on East Fourth, the swank pad looks as if it could have played host to a gaggle of Mad Men and go-go dancers in the 1960s.

The bar has a psychedelic glow. The red-and-white decor is ultra-mod. And the vibe is as snazzy as it is intimate.

Check out the curved plastic Tulip Chairs, by Eero Saarinen – the pioneering Finnish American architect and designer renowned for the TWA Terminal (now a hotel) at JFK Airport.

Or the champagne and cocktail lists… refined indulgence.

Opened in 2022, it’s been largely an after-show stop for Hilarities attendees.

No longer.

It’s now open as a stand-alone bar -- 6 p.m. to close on Fridays and Saturdays. Info.

Classics, Weird, Everything In Between: Huffman Takes Helm at 40-Year-Old Cinematheque

Courtesy Cleveland Cinematheque

It’s one of Cleveland’s great cultural institutions and a film festival that runs the entire year. Willem Dafoe, John Waters and Peter Bogdanovich have all attended screenings.

Dave Huffman wants to keep its 40-year legacy strong. But the just-named new director of the Cleveland Cinematheque also promises to bring new twists to the programming.

“The Cinematheque has established something that was amazing,” says Huffman, who held programming and marketing roles with Cleveland Cinemas for 20 years.

“I love the classics and foundational films,” he adds.

“But I also love the weird and strange and new movies – and I want to use my marketing background for audience building with themed nights and events.”

Opened in 1985, the Cinematheque is one of the top art-house cinemas in the country – and, unlike many multiplexes, it has survived and thrived in the age of streaming.

“The Cinematheque’s audiences are more passionate about film and understand the importance of seeing them on the big screen,” says Huffman.

“The theater offers things you won’t find in a mainstream theater – and I’m excited to put my stamp on it.”

Cavalanche Unlocked: Cavs Find Keys to Win in Game 5

Cavalanche!

Donovan Mitchell was a non-entity -- then came the second half of Monday’s 112-103 win in Game 4 against the Pistons.

Cleveland went on a 24-0 run to open the third quarter and Mitchell tied Kyrie Irving and LeBron James by scoring 21 points.

He scored 39 points in the second half to tie an NBA playoff record.

It wasn’t all Mitchell – which bodes well for the Cavs in Game 5 -- 8 tonight.

  • Cade Cunningham shot only 5-15 when guarded by Dean Wade.

  • James Harden had a lower usage rate than usual. It kept him fresh and efficient.

  • Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen dominated on defense at the rim.

They’ve found the keys to beating the Pistons. Hopefully, they take them to Detroit.
