Hopkins celebrates 100th birthday as it flies into the future

More than 100,000 people gathered in a sod-covered field to witness the coming of a new age: The landing of a single DeHavilland DH-4 mail plane that brought modern aviation to Cleveland.

One hundred years later, the city will celebrate the centennial of Cleveland Hopkins Airport by honoring its storied past and unveiling ambitious plans for the next century.

  • Originally known as Cleveland Municipal Airport, it was the first municipally owned airport in the U.S. when it opened July 1, 1925.

  • In 1930, the airport installed the first control tower, two-way radio communications and airfield lighting systems.

  • By 1931, it handled over 72,000 passengers and 2.9 million pounds of airmail, outpacing major hubs like New York. It was the largest airport in the world by land area and led in landings, with 54,750 recorded that year.

That’s history – and Hopkins is drawing on it to chart a transformative new chapter dubbed CLEvolution.

In May, the city announced a new terminal as part of a $1.1 billion makeover and the beginning of a multi-phase $3 billion renovation. The expansion is part of the aviation-and-space project known as The Aerozone.

“We’re seeing a lot of growth in these areas around the country, and we need coordinated economic development to expand the footprint of something that could be really special,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, in a 216 Scoop interview.

Starting Tuesday, the city will celebrate Hopkins’ past glory and future promise with a series of displays and events at the airport.

Meanwhile, the West Park Historical Society will host a centennial birthday celebration at the Aviator Pub and Restaurant, located across the airport. 4-7 p.m. Tuesday.

Board games galore and no one’s bored at Tabletop in Ohio City

Board games surged in popularity during COVID, fueled by people seeking human interaction during lockdowns. But unlike many one-hit lockdown wonders, this craze keeps on going.

Enter Tabletop Board Game Café – one of the longest running analogue gamer spots in the country. Since opening in 2015, it has been ground zero for the revival – and not just as some retro throwback.

It celebrates its 10th anniversary with a bash at 6:30 tonight. Go here.

The West 25th spot boasts 1,200 board games, including strategy-based titles released by independent start-ups that have taken gaming into realms far beyond Monopoly.

There are more than 5,000 games released every year. Yes, they offer a tactile experience and evoke nostalgia. But they’re more than a roll of the dice.

Many incorporate story-based strategies and virtual worlds – an approach that harkens back to Dungeons & Dragons. Some are multi-tiered and complex, integrating apps and digital platforms to augment realities.

Tabletop has a gamemaster to provide suggestions and support. It also rolls out flatbreads and sandwiches, milkshakes and mixed drinks.

A café, an eatery and a bar, yes. But more than that, it’s a community.

The grass is high, the weeds are wild — and good landscapers are booked solid. If your yard is out of control, skip the back-and-forth.

Ohio, the heart of Bitcoin?

Crypto activists in the state legislature are trying to transform Ohio from an also-ran to a trailblazer when it comes to digital assets, especially Bitcoin.

The latest move is the just passed “Bitcoin Rights Bill” that allows a $200 tax exemption on capital gains from crypto transactions at the state level. The goal is to boast crypto adoption in Ohio and help make it more transactional.

It’s part of a broader pro-crypto push:

  • In January, the house introduced the Ohio Strategic Cryptocurrency Act that would allow Ohio’s treasurer to allocate up to 10 percent of state funds into a reserve of digital assets, including Bitcoin. Treasurer Robert Sprague has expressed concerns given the volatility of digital assets.

  • Sprague and Secretary of State Frank LaRose are exploring allowing the use of cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, to pay state fees, services and taxes.

  • Crypto investor and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has made digital assets a cornerstone of his campaign – and has promised to introduce Bitcoin education into Ohio’s public schools if elected.

NBA’s craziest week starts tonight: Cavs ready?

NBA free agency begins at 6 tonight. The Cavs are already making moves in advance of the craziest week of the off-season:

  • Cleveland traded Isaac Okoro to Chicago for oft-injured guard Lonzo Ball. The Cavs get a stellar passer and playmaker who can orchestrate the offense and play tough defense. But can he stay healthy?

  • Team needs: Frontcourt depth. A veteran guard.

  • The Cavs re-signed Sam Merrill. The team likes to re-sign its guys early. So, not striking a deal with Ty Jerome means he could be gone, especially after trading for Ball and drafting guard Tyrese Proctor.

  • Barring a trade of Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland or Dean Wade, the Cavs will be limited to signing players to minimum contracts to improve the roster. Possible targets: Larry Nance Jr., Spencer Dinwiddie, Malcolm Brogdon.
