Cleveland Food Pioneer Brad Friedlander Brings Beloved Moxie Back to Life

Brad Friedlander has been steering the food scene long before there were foodies.
The restaurateur’s run goes back to 1980, with Lopez, in Cleveland Heights. He’s opened more than a dozen eateries since then.
Moxie, opened in 1998, became one of the area’s most beloved spots and was named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Esquire.
It ushered in a new foodie era for the city and was the springboard for renowned chefs, like Doug Katz, Karen Small and Eric Williams.
Friedlander never stopped thinking about it, even after it closed in 2019.
“It was a labor of love for me,” says Friedlander. “I’ve thought about re-opening it since COVID.”
Now it’s real.
Friedlander and his business partner Michael DuBois are bringing the bistro back — starting Monday in the old Bar Louie space in Legacy Village.
“People kept me asking about it; there aren’t a lot of places like it,” he says. “We had a range of menus and recipes and will bring many of them back.”
Moxie will also feature the 35-seat speakeasy called The Seven – which will mix signature cocktails, desserts and small plates.
It will join Friedlander’s other Legacy Village concept: The Greek-themed EVOO, which opened in March.
🍽 What does Moxie reopening at Legacy Village mean to Cleveland’s food scene?
- 🏆 Esquire’s best new restaurant of 1998 coming back: some things deserve a second act
- 👨🍳 Friedlander launching Doug Katz, Karen Small and Eric Williams: Moxie has a legacy that goes beyond the food
- 🍸 The Seven speakeasy with signature cocktails and small plates: 35 seats of hidden magic alongside the bistro
- ❤️ “People kept asking about it”: a restaurant that inspires that kind of loyalty for five years after closing is genuinely rare
A $600 Streaming Glitch: Cavs Rank Last in TV Accessibility
High-priced contracts forced the Cavs to manage their salary cap over the last two seasons.
Now, the team is forcing fans to manage theirs.
Watching the Cavs in the regular season and playoffs could cost them more than $600.
The team’s new streaming contract with DAZN promises no more freezing screens.
But there’s a big glitch:
The company doesn’t have a deal with cable providers – which means you’ll have to also subscribe to ESPN, Peacock and Prime Video to get all the games.
It’s earned the Cavs the dubious distinction as being the least accessible NBA team to watch, according to Awful Announcing.
“They will have 59 games exclusive to streaming, including DAZN, which costs $120,” says the analysis. “Then, 10 other games will be on other platforms because they are national exclusives.”
Will bars incur the charges for a commercial subscription to DAZN ($170/month) and for the required dedicated hardware ($399) – not to mention the other providers?
OK, one consolation: 15 local games will be simulcast for free on WOIO and WUAB.
📺 How are you watching the Cavs this season given the DAZN situation?
- 💸 Paying for DAZN, ESPN, Peacock and Prime: I love this team more than I love my wallet
- 🍺 Bar only: let someone else pay the $170/month commercial subscription and $399 hardware
- 📡 The 15 free simulcasts on WOIO and WUAB: I will work with what I can get
- 😤 Not watching at all: the Cavs ranking last in accessibility is embarrassing and I am making a point
Beyond the Shadows: Dark Wave Dance Cave Lights Up Goth-o-Ween

Party photos by Extraordinaire Photos
Dark shadows. Gloomy vibes. Absorbing midnight with make-up and black-on-black threads.
Yes, there’s that.
But Goths are also a lively bunch – especially when Dark Wave Dance Cave throws the party.
“It’s people expressing themselves, and it’s kind of a fashion show,” says DJ Mimi Dromette, who co-founded the monthly soiree in 2021.
DWDC will get especially colorful – even if attendees come dressed in black – for Goth-o-Ween, 8:30 p.m. at the Winchester. Info.
It rolls out a costume contest, themed drinks and giveaways.
And you don’t have to be a Goth to go.
“There are misconceptions about Goth – some people think it’s satanic or just fashion,” says Dromette. “It’s people who are really into music.”
No doubt: Dromette and DJ Mark Darkstar will spin Goth, but also synth-pop, new wave, post-punk, industrial, even ‘spooky classical.’
“A lot of the bands, like the Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees, were called Goth retroactively,” she adds. “It’s just great music.”
🖤 What would bring you to Goth-o-Ween at the Winchester Saturday?
- 🎶 The music: Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, industrial and spooky classical in one night
- 👗 The costume contest and fashion show energy: Goths do Halloween better than anyone
- 🎃 It’s Cleveland’s most unique Halloween party and you don’t even have to be a Goth to go
- 🍸 Themed drinks and giveaways: the vibe alone makes it worth showing up in all black
