Explore the secret subway… Cleveland History Days are here again

Clevelanders celebrated it as a modern marvel when the Detroit Superior Bridge opened in 1918. At the time, it was the largest steel and concrete reinforced bring in the world.
It’s still admired for its architecture and as a symbol of the city’s economic glory days. This weekend, Clevelanders will get to relive those days thanks to Rediscover Veterans Memorial Bridge - Go Dream.
From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, the event will allow Clevelanders to explore the “secret” subway part of the bridge.
From its opening until 1954, the lower-level hosted Cleveland’s first, and only subway, connecting transit lines on the west side with downtown. Once a popular route, it closed as people moved to the suburbs, cars sales soared, and streetcars fell out of favor.
But it lives on as an attraction – drawing thousands of Cleveland during special openings and events. The streetcar level of the bridge received a $7 million grant to turn it into a one-of-a-kind sky park.
The event features art installations, lighting, sound and performances. More info.
It’s part of Cleveland History Days – an 11-day series of tours and parties that runs through June 29.
It opens Thursday with six events, including “Hollywood on Cuyahoga.” The tribute to movies shot in Cleveland – like “The Avengers,” “Deer Hunter,” “A Christmas Story” and the upcoming “Superman.” 7 p.m. More info.

Sunset has crossed past 9 p.m. Summer is two days away. And Wednesdays are all booked with the best free deal in town.
The series of the season starts tonight when the stilt-walkers, hula-hoopers, food trucks and bands – and thousands of Clevelanders -- hit University Circle.
Yup, Wade Oval Wednesday is back.
The weekly picnic-and-concert series opens its season tonight at 5:30 p.m. with soul-funk group Stix Quartet, Akron hip-hop duo Free Black! and the Shaw High School Marching Band.
The Cleveland Botanical Garden will open the Kohl Gate on select dates, allowing free access between the concert space and the gardens. WOW will also roll out themed nights, like LGBTQ+ Pride Night (June 25, featuring local drag performers) and International Night (August 6, in partnership with Cleveland Cultural Gardens).
The series runs through August 20. More info.
Zombie fever: Flesh-munching freaks invade theaters

The announcement that a sequel to “28 Days Later” sparked a frenzy. The 2002 horror classic wasn’t available on streaming platforms or on DVD and Blu-Ray – and a bidding war ensued for old copies of physical formats.
It underscores how much people love zombies, and especially those crazy, flesh-munching cretins in the franchise.
Well, now they have a double shot of mayhem to drool over the freaks. “28 Days Later” is now streaming and the sequel, “28 Years Later,” hits theaters on Thursday. Trailer here.
One of the most anticipated releases of the summer, the post-apocalyptic horror film – and the third in the series – is set, yup, 28 years after a rage virus escaped from bio-weapons lab.
The plot has been handled like a national secret. Little is known except for this:
It follows a group of survivors that have managed to find their way onto an island, and one that ventures into infested mainland and discovers a mutation that has spread to the infected and survivors.

Johnny Wu is a one-man movie studio. For more than 20 years, the Cleveland filmmaker has produced, directed or edited 12 feature films – an orgy of fists and kicks and buckets of fury.
He’s a DIY dervish on a movie rampage.
“I’m involved in every step of the process, from the script to finding the cast to organizing schedules and rehearsals to producing, directing and editing, getting a distributor… and, in the end, promoting the movie,” says Wu, a native Clevelander who has lived in the Philippines and Panama and has family in China and Hong Kong.
It’s given him an appreciation of international cinema, but also the tastes of different audiences and how to reach them. He has struck video-on-demand and DVD distribution deals for the United States and Asia.
Wu learned young.
“My dad was a film aficionado and owned 5,000 Beta and 4,000 VHS tapes of movies,” he says, referring to the antiquated movie-viewing formats.
It inspired him to make movies but also to share them with others.
Summon International Horror Hotel Film Festival. The bash brings dozens of slasher, sci-fi, action and fantasy short and feature flicks to Crowne Plaza Cleveland Airport Thursday through Sunday.
It also rolls out scream-queen competitions, script readings, lectures and workshops on movie making. More info.
