You’ve Come a Long Way, Cleveland: Pride in the Cle Returns This Saturday

You’ve come a long way, baby. Pride celebrations have evolved from coming-out parties in bars and on streets to a massive celebration that attracts all walks.

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, the 11th annual Pride in the Cle will step off from Public Square with parade and proceed to Malls B and C, with performers, food trucks, vendors and bands.

There are several Pride-related events around town this weekend:

  • Twist Social Club: The Rainbow Glow dance party (Friday) and pre- and post-Pride soirees on Saturday. Info.

  • Grog Shop: BODY ELECTRIC: Alternative Pride Show at Grog Shop (Friday). Info.

  • Jukebox: A  Sapphic Soiree (Friday) and Pride patio party (Saturday). Info.

  • Mahall’s: Pink Pony Club: A Pop Divas Pride Dance Party (Saturday). Info.

  • Leather Stallion: Opened in 1970, the godfather of gay bars hosts its popular Sunday Funday patio party. Info.

The bars and clubs should celebrate. After all, in the 1970s and ‘80s they fostered the LGBTQ+ community that led to Pride.

“Downtown was dead, but clubs were hotbeds of activity,” says Dean Rufus, a DJ who provided the soundtrack to the nightlife.

"People might talk about the mainstreaming of gay culture, but in many ways you had a more integrated crowd at a place like Traxx,”  he adds, referring to the Warehouse District club that brought all walks together onto the dance floor.

90 Years Later: The Torso Killer’s Bloody Rampage Hits Capitol Theatre

Superheroes and serial killers. We got it all, Cleveland.

Enter the Cleveland maniac who dismembered and decapitated transients and sex workers in a grisly rampage.

Ninety years after his first victim, the Torso Killer remains one of America's first modern serial killers.

Now, there’s a film about the subject – and it was made in Cleveland.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, “Kingsbury Run” will make its premiere at Capitol Theater. Info.

It explores the efforts of Eliot Ness (Cleveland’s most famous crimefighter after Superman) to track down the serial killer of 12 people during the Great Depression in Kingsbury Run – a shantytown running from East 90th Street and Kinsman Road to the Cuyahoga River.

Director Jon Price and Jim Osso – who plays Ness – will be on hand for the premiere.

Gelato, Galleries & Good Times: Little Italy Throws the Ultimate Summer Art Party

Photos by John Petkovic

You're just as likely to hear the broken English of an exchange student than Italian. And the neighborhood is home to more cocktail sippers than stonemasons.

But no place in Cleveland has retained the historical look and Old World charm more than Little Italy.

Here come Little Italy’s Annual Summer Art Walk. The three-day event – Friday through Sunday – kicks off a rush of summer art fests and parties. Info.

It features galleries, studios and street exhibits showcasing area artists. The walk also dovetails the past and present by showcasing Little Italy's blend of artful spirit and epicurean sensibilities.

Of course, there’s also pasta, pizza, cannoli, gelato and cigars in a neighborhood where the songs of Dino and Frankie still play on the street.

For the Benefit of All the People Forever: CMA Celebrates 110 Year

It opened with a bold statement, “For the benefit of all the people forever.” The Cleveland Museum of Art is still living up to the promise 110 years later.

Its collection of 66,500 works span 6,000 years. It’s been hailed by as one of the most important museums in America – with one of the top collections of Asian art in the world.

And general admission has been free since its June 6, 1916 opening.

Funded and built on land donated by Cleveland’s industrialists, it’s also a reminder of a time when the wealthy were dedicated philanthropists – unlike the freaky tech oligarchs of our time.

On Saturday, the CMA will celebrate the milestone by extending free admission to its current exhibitions: Manet & Morisot and Martin Puryear: Nexu.

It will also offer cookies to diners at Provenance Café, book store discounts – and will commemorate the anniversary at Parade the Circle (June 13). Info.
