Cleveland Patio Guide 2025: Top bars and restaurants for summer

Photos by John Petkovic

We never know when summer is coming or going. Sunday morning was cold. Wednesday is supposed to hit the 80s.

The meteorological mayhem only makes us cherish the sunny days even more, on a patio, with friends, over drinks and food and conversation.

Raise a glass to the golden days of summer. How long they will last, no one knows – so enjoy them while they last.

It’s the 216 Scoop Cleveland Patio Guide. There are more than 30 spots in the guide, located down below in The 216 Rundown. We’ll be adding to and updating the list over the coming weeks.

Some come with stellar views of skylines, the waterways, streets. Some are secluded getaways from the world. Some pair well with al fresco dining, a glass of wine, and cappuccino.

Cowpoke coral on neon steroids brings Yee-Haw to East Fourth

“Yee-Haw” and “Giddy Up.” The signs at Jolene’s Honky Tonk proclaim party-time, but also a new chapter for East Fourth Street.

Within days, the country-themed bar named after Dolly Parton’s signature song will swing open its doors in the space that once housed Greenhouse Tavern and, later, Indie and Gabriel’s Southern Kitchen.

Jolene’s is a cowpoke coral electrified by neon on steroids. It rolls out a glowing altar to the queen of country – to go with old-timey picnic chairs, a retro coin-operated riding horse, a tractor on the rooftop patio.

The menu is limited to chicken tenders and nuggets served with fries and slaw. After all, this is a party zone and the focus is on drinking.

Beer is served in cowboy-boot glasses and Cowgirl Kool-Aid served in giant solo cups. The woo-hoo saloon is also focused on boozy celebrations, like Nashville-style bachelorette parties.

While places with similar themes have existed in the Warehouse District and the Flats, it’s a first for East Fourth – which is identified as more of a dining district that starts and ends earlier than bar drags.

Jolene’s is owned by Hangry Brands, which recently purchased the East Fourth speakeasy-themed Society Lounge.

It also owns and will operate The Dugout, a seasonal sports bar that will operate in a designated outdoor refreshment area in the current valent parking area on East Fourth.

A summer opening has been targeted, but there has been no construction as of yet in the space.

Ohio tax holiday expands days, items… Says yes to restaurants, no to weed

What started as a school project has turned into a shopping spree.

The State of Ohio has announced that it has expanded its 2025 sales tax holiday from 10 days to two weeks.

The holiday will run from midnight Aug. 1 until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 14. During that time, purchases – in person or online – under $500 will not be subject to sales tax.

Ohio introduced the tax holiday in 2015 as a three-day event to ease the financial burden on families purchasing back-to-school essentials. It applied to clothing items at $75 or less and school supplies at $20 or less.

Last year, the tax holiday was expanded to last 10 days and include more items – including, for the first time, dining out in restaurants.

Its shift from a school-focused event to a broader economic stimulus reflects Ohio’s attempt to alleviate financial pressures faced by its residents.

“The timing of this year’s sales tax holiday not only supports families preparing for back-to-school, but also provides relief on other important household needs,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement. For eligible items, go here.

Cleveland Patio Guide 2025: Top bars and restaurants for summer

Raise a glass to the golden days of summer are upon us. How long they will last, no one knows – so enjoy them while they last… These bars and restaurants feature stellar patios where you can soak up summer.

17 River Grille: It’s like walking into a postcard -- a patio deck that overlooks the picturesque Chagrin Falls and boasts a priceless view.

All Saints Public House: This laid-back leafy patio feels like a park in the city and boasts a vibe that's laid-back yet lively.

The Aviator: Located across from Hopkins, the sprawling patio of this modern American eatery is perfect for martinis and small plates while watching the planes come and go.

Bar 32: The views stir the drink on the 32nd floor of the downtown Hilton -- with stellar shots of the skyline, Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River.

Bruno's: When in Cleveland, do as the Romans – at this Italian patio adorned with flowers, ivy, iron gates, a fountain and cappuccino on the table.

Casa La Luna: Located on site of the Cleveland's first high-level bridge (built in 1878), it’s a wonderful perch to look out onto the skyline, Flats and Cuyahoga River

Collision Bend: Located in the 19th-century building that once housed the storied Watermark, it boasts an energetic crowd and timeless views of the Flats.

Don's Pomeroy House: The grove of thick trees and luscious plants amid this mid-19th century mansion feels like a breezy day in some old southern novel. One lemonade, sir.

Edison’s Pub: Scarlett Johansson dug hanging out here while filming ‘Avengers.’ Good choice. It’s a picnic-table party that’s fun and hip with an “everybody’s welcome” attitude.

Forest City Brewery: It feels like a picnic area in an enchanted forest and a walk into another time.

Guarino's: Dean Martin loved this spot. After all, the patio of this 1918 institution is a deal you can't refuse… an immaculate garden with lights, greenery, flowers and statues.

Houlihan’s Westlake: It feels like a quaint little town -- a secluded patio with a bar, tables, trees, an outdoor kitchen, lights and a happy-go-lucky crowd.

L'Albatros:  With its creative mix of stylish décor and leafy, organic charm, the patio of  this French eatery is reminiscent of something in swank South Beach.

La Dolce Vita: Al fresco dining on sidewalk is perfect for people watching. The patio behind the restaurant is snazzy and manicured. Ah, like Fellini said, “the good life.”

Le Petit Triangle: The Ohio City eatery rolls out a French menu that's as delightful as the Parisian-style café seating. One crepe, please.

Leather Stallion: Times have changed since this gay institution opened in 1970, as a leather bar. It’s casual when it comes to attire and attitude – and the patio is the perfect summer setting.

Luxe: It’s like some South Beach pad. Except that you never feel like you’re crashing someone else’s party. Stylish and cool without being pretentious.

Merwin's Wharf: This sprawling patio along the Cuyahoga sits amid a unique mix of industry and nature, old bridges and wild greenery. Great views and vibes.

Moosehead Hoof & Ladder: The back of this eatery – housed in a 1940s firehouse – juts into the woods overlooking Rocky River. So much so that you feel cut off from civilization… trees, leaves, plants, greenery, deer in the distance.

Olesia’s Taverne of Richfield: The patio of this circa-1886 building boast iron gates, greenery, a spacious layout – along with a superb Continental menu and the vibes of a 19th-century novel.

Pier W: The patio feels like the wide deck of a ship, offering what might be the best views of Lake Erie, the downtown skyline and the setting sun.

Poppy: The eatery boasts a homey vibe and sophisticated menu – and charming café seating and a carriage house bar on the patio.

Sarita: The immaculate greenery, flowers, vines and overhead trellis at this secluded getaway do a good job of telling the world: Leave me alone

The South Side: The patio is open year-round, features two sides, indoor/outdoor, along with a stone fireplace, comfy seats and tables that put plastic picnic fare to shame.

Stone Mad: The pub feels like Ireland and the patio is maddening — constructed out of stone tables, meticulous masonry and that fireplace.

Treehouse: The big toucan mural on the wall says, “Lovely day for a Guinness.” True, especially on this leafy and lively patio that packs in the partyers.

Vosh/Georgetown: You’ll think you’re lounging around in a park with all the tall trees and brick walls blocking out the noise of Detroit Avenue and the world.

AI apocalypse? Will it kill jobs, crush economy, render college degrees worthless?

AI developments like Google ’s just-released VEO 3 video generator have left tech geeks in awe. But there is danger brewing.

AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, according to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, a company dedicated to developing safe AI models.

“Most people don’t realize this is imminent,” he said, in an interview with Axios. “It sounds unbelievable, and people just dismiss it.”

He added that AI companies and government officials need to stop “sugarcoating” the looming threat of widespread job loss, especially in sectors such as tech, finance, law, and consulting.

As a result, unemployment in the U.S. could rise by 10% to 20% over the next five years.

Meanwhile, hiring of new graduates by Big Tech companies has collapsed by nearly 50% from pre-pandemic levels, according to a report from SignalFire.

Jobs most at risk of being replaced reside in white-collar areas such as: information gathering, finance, data analysis, teaching, journalism and web development. The safest are blue-collar, home care and service jobs that require hands-on workers.
