Much-anticipated Globe Iron ready to hit the stage in the Flats

A new era in the music scene and the west bank of the Flats starts when Globe Iron swings open its doors Friday.

The joint venture between AEG Presents and Jacobs Entertainment Inc. will host How We Feel. It’s the first of 15 concerts in May, which includes Mushroomhead, the Damned, MJ Lenderman, Napalm Death and the Melvins.

With a capacity of 1,200, the club adds another player to a concert club market that includes the Beachland Ballroom, the Roxy at Mahall’s and House of Blues.

AEG has bigger plans, however.

“We see it as a chance to develop and establish relationships with artists that could graduate to our other venues, the Agora and Jacobs Pavilion,” says Mike Tata, Integrated Marketing Manager of AEG Presents.

The circa-1853 building – 2325 Elm Street, Cleveland – is the former home of the Globe Iron Works Foundry.

It transitioned into a dance club in the 1990s and early 2000s and became the home of Metropolis and Trilogy – when techno and big-box dance clubs thrived and 1,200 people packed the space on a Sunday night. Then it became Dream, a R&B club that was shut down by the city in 2011.

“[The time as a dance club] made the transition to a concert club easier,” says Tata. “We’ll have general admission, primarily, but we also built an elevated deck area called ‘The Deck’ that will be a private lounge with 40 seats.”

Globe Iron will have two permanent bars, a private bar and portable quick-serve bars. The goal is to host 100 concerts a year, to go with 50 special events, such as corporate parties and weddings.

“We’ve been working on the set-up since August and there will still be doing some fine-tuning,” says Tata. “Summer tends to be the lighter period for a club like this, and May will give us a chance to get things right before heading into the fall.”

Hunger games: Summer food truck series returns

Downtown lunch offerings just got better… Summer food trucks are back.

The series pairs a rotation of 50 vendors with live music at iconic parks and plazas downtown.

It kicks off tomorrow when Truck Stop Thursday pulls up to One Cleveland Center Plaza, at East Ninth Street and St. Clair Avenue. Food and music are served 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The series runs, which runs through Sept. 1, also gives Clevelanders the chance to visit the following locations:

  • Memorial Monday - Fort Huntington Park (West Third Street and Lakeside Avenue)

  • Food Truck Tuesday - KeyBank Plaza (Rockwell Avenue and West Mall Drive)

  • Walnut Wednesday - Perk Plaza (East 12th Street and St. Clair Avenue)

  • Free Stamp Friday - Willard Park (East Ninth Street and Lakeside Avenue)

The food truck series started in 2011, with Walnut Wednesdays, “to create an engaging environment in parks and public spaces near office buildings, where people can connect with each other and the city,” according to Michael Deemer, president and CEO of Downtown Cleveland, Inc. More info here.

Indian pizza? Masala Monsoon brings bold menu to old Antonio’s spot

Photos by John Petkovic, food photos courtesy Masala Monsoon, Antonio’s logo via Antonio’s Pizzeria.

The southwest suburbs are home to some of the area’s top Indian restaurants, from Annapurna to Honest, Jaipur Junction and Cuisine of India. Here comes another…

Masala Monsoon is set to open in the longtime home of Antonio’s Pizza at the Shoppes of Parma.

The menu boasts classic Tandoori dishes, an assortment of naans and unique takes on masalas, curries and soups – as well as Tandoori takes on salmon and chili. It also rolls out things you’d be hard-pressed to find in any Indian spot.

Pizzas? Pastas? In a nod to Antonio’s – whose pizza was called the best in the U.S.A. by Drew Carey – MM has cooked up some innovative Indian takes on Italian food.

There’s the Paneer Pesto Pesta, one of three pastas on the menu. There are also four pies on the menu, including the Paneer Tikka Pizza – which MM calls its fusion masterpiece.

Founded in 1967, Antonio’s ruled the pizza scene for decades – and this corner of Parma since its opening in 1975. It closed last year after the death of founder Grace Loschiavo.

In April, her family announced that it will keep her memory – and menu – alive with Original Antonio’s Pizzeria, 5722 Chevrolet Boulevard, Parma. It currently operates as a take-out spot but will also feature a sit-down component.

The 216 Rundown

Raise a stein in the biergarten for Maifest

Ah, nothing like a biergarten to sip away the day. Raise a stein for Maifest. At 6 p.m. Thursday, the traditional German celebration of spring hits Hofbrauhaus. The Bavarian-style spot will open its 450-seat biergarten for the season with a hearty party that includes Hammer-Schlagen – a German game in which participants compete against each other to drive nails into a wooden beam. It also rolls out lawn games, food specials and music by North Coast Prost.  More info here.

Love brings psychedelic ‘60s to the Beachland

The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club” is often seen as the defining musical freak-out of the ‘60s. But few albums from the era have had a more lasting influence than Love’s “Forever Changes.” The Los Angeles band’s psychedelic opus has inspired generations of bands of all stripes  – and captured the zeitgeist and musical sensibilities of the ‘60s. At 7 tonight, Love guitarist Johnny Echols will be joined by neo-psych rockers Baby Lemonade to perform the music of Love at the Beachland Ballroom. More info here.

Legendary concerts and photos that captured them

Cleveland’s rich music tradition is the stuff of legend. The city’s photographers bring those legends to live. At 7 tonight, Music Box Supper Club will host three of them when it rolls out Sound into Image. The evening features Cleveland photographers -- Anastasia Pantsios, Jim Lanza, and Karen Novak – displaying their shots and talking about the concerts that inspired them. The shows run the gamut, from breakout concerts to small club shows that made scene history. More info here.

NOTES ON A COCKTAIL NAPKIN

Sports, Entertainment, & Culture

Browns earn high praise for NFL draft

The Browns were the talk of the draft. Here’s what the gurus are saying...

Bleacher Report, B+: The Browns' roster is much, much stronger than it was a week ago, and there's at least a glimmer of hope for the future. Link.

CBS Sports, B+: I did adore and highly respect general manager Andrew Berry's decision to trade back from No. 2 overall to gain extra picks, especially that 2026 first-rounder. Link.

Fox Sports, B: The Browns are either the smartest team in the NFL or, more likely, a ship without a rudder. Link.

Mel Kiper, Jr, ESPN, A+: The Browns also added a lot of draft capital here, including a 2026 first-rounder. The other main reason I gave the Browns an A+ shouldn’t be a surprise. They got quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 144. Link.

NFL.com, B+: The Sanders pick could be the best personnel move the Browns have made in years. Link.

NY Post, A+: When you draft for best player available, you can end up with two running backs and two quarterbacks. Graham is a stud, Fannin set NCAA tight end records, and they acquired a 2026 first-rounder. Link.

Sports Illustrated, A-: The Browns still have a load of questions at receiver and along the offensive line, but they found good value throughout. Link.
