Goodbye Yellow Bird: Spiritโ€™s Departure & Hopkinsโ€™ New Flight Path

The yellow bird is extinct. Customer service is disconnected. A Hopkins legend is gone.

So long, Spirit.

A failed government bailout and the doubling of jet fuel prices after the U.S. and Israelโ€™s attack on Iran crashed the struggling carrier.

Spirit brought new life to Hopkins

Spirit provided a lifeline in bleak times.

United Airlines de-hubbed from Hopkins in 2014 โ€“ resulting in a 60% drop in flights and a degraded status.

Spirit landed a year later to fill gaps with low fares and new routes.

At its peak, it carried one of eight passengers and offered nonstop service to a dozen destinations.

Spirit sold cheap tickets and forced others to drop prices. Fares at Hopkins plunged 28% in the mid-2010s thanks to the โ€œSpirit effect.โ€

Now What?

Its death elevates Frontier and upstarts like Avelo Airlines. It also means fewer ultra-cheap options to the West Coast and less price competition across the board.

What about Hopkins?

The airport needs to diversify: Unitedโ€™s flight share dropped from 60% to 25% in a decade; Spiritโ€™s tanked from 12.5% to zero.

Being too dependent on budget carriers leaves an airport vulnerable โ€“ especially as geopolitics hit already tight margins.

Already, Frontier and other budget airlines have asked the Trump administration for $2.5 billion in help due to the Iran War.

The flight forward

Hopkinsโ€™ $1.6 billion renovation will improve infrastructure and provide a new terminal by 2032.

The goal is to elevate the airport to get more nonstop routes โ€” San Juan, Austin and the West Coast โ€” and lure a greater presence from legacy carriers (Delta and American) and budget airlines (JetBlue).

Allen Unleashed: 22-19 Masterclass + Bench Firepower Lifts Cavs Into Second Round

Outworked and lethargic for the first 20 minutes โ€“ followed by grit and hustle to close out the half.

And the Cavs didnโ€™t look back.

A dominating performance on both ends of the floor in the second half sent Cleveland to a 114-102 win over the Raptors and into the second round of the playoffs.

Keys to the win:

  • Yes, Jarrett Allen was dominating, with 22 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks. Toronto played small on him since Game 3. He made them pay last night.

  • The Cavs snagged 20 offensive rebounds (eight from Allen) โ€” or 43% of all misses. In the third quarter alone, they outscored the Raptors 14-0 on second-chance points. Total domination.

  • Max Strus, Jaylon Tyson and Sam Merrill changed the tempo with hustle, defense and a combined 32 points off the bench. The Cavs outscored the Raptors by 20, 16 and 19 points, respectively, while they were on the floor.

The pressure was on the stars, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, but it was Allen and the role players that stepped up and took over.

The Cavs open the second round against the Pistons at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Detroit.

Viva Mexico: Battle of Puebla the Rallying Cry for Cinco de Mayo

John Petkovic

Contrary to popular myth, Cinco de Mayo does not commemorate the day a gringo put a lime in a bottle of Corona and shouted, โ€œViva Mexico.โ€

But the holiday that marks the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 has become a popular day to partake in Mexican-themed celebrations.

Several restaurants host music, food and drink specials and music. Others have authentic vibes ย ย that will make you say, โ€˜Ole.โ€™

Whoa, it also falls on Taco Tuesday. Check out 16 Rundown for our Cinco de Mayo Guide.

From Kent State Bloodshed to Iran Backlash: History Rhymes on May 4

The war onย Iran is as unpopularย as the Vietnam War was in the 1970s,ย according to a new poll.

The parallel is poignant on the anniversary of the Kent State massacre.

On May 4, 1970, four unarmed students were killed and nine woundedย when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on protestors.

It marked a turning point in the antiwar movement, sparked national outrage and the largest student strike in U.S. history: four million.

โ€œEverything changed after Kent State,โ€ says Jerry Casale, of legendary Akron band Devo.

A KSU student, he went on to form Devo with fellow Kent grad, Mark Mothersbaugh.

โ€œI saw it when it happened and two of my friends died that day,โ€ he says. โ€œIt brought existential urgency to what we were feeling.โ€

โ€œWe used to talk about de-evolution as a philosophical theory, but that day was a collective nervous breakdown that made us see, first-hand, that Devo was real.โ€
