A failed government bailout and the doubling of jet fuel prices after the U.S. and Israel’s attack on Iran crashed the struggling carrier.

Spirit brought new life to Hopkins

Spirit provided a lifeline in bleak times.

United Airlines de-hubbed from Hopkins in 2014 – resulting in a 60% drop in flights and a degraded status.

Spirit landed a year later to fill gaps with low fares and new routes.

At its peak, it carried one of eight passengers and offered nonstop service to a dozen destinations.

Spirit sold cheap tickets and forced others to drop prices. Fares at Hopkins plunged 28% in the mid-2010s thanks to the “Spirit effect.”

Now What?

Its death elevates Frontier and upstarts like Avelo Airlines. It also means fewer ultra-cheap options to the West Coast and less price competition across the board.

What about Hopkins?

The airport needs to diversify: United’s flight share dropped from 60% to 25% in a decade; Spirit’s tanked from 12.5% to zero.

Being too dependent on budget carriers leaves an airport vulnerable – especially as geopolitics hit already tight margins.

Already, Frontier and other budget airlines have asked the Trump administration for $2.5 billion in help due to the Iran War.

The flight forward

Hopkins’ $1.6 billion renovation will improve infrastructure and provide a new terminal by 2032.

The goal is to elevate the airport to get more nonstop routes — San Juan, Austin and the West Coast — and lure a greater presence from legacy carriers (Delta and American) and budget airlines (JetBlue).

Outworked and lethargic for the first 20 minutes – followed by grit and hustle to close out the half.

And the Cavs didn’t look back.

A dominating performance on both ends of the floor in the second half sent Cleveland to a 114-102 win over the Raptors and into the second round of the playoffs.

Keys to the win:

The pressure was on the stars, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, but it was Allen and the role players that stepped up and took over.

The Cavs open the second round against the Pistons at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Detroit.

La Casa de Luchita’s: The Shaker Square revives a Luchita’s tradition: A weeklong Cinco celebration with a themed menu and a featured dish, chiles en nogada. 11 a.m. Tuesday Info.

La Fiesta: Now located in Highland Heights, the story goes back to 1952 when Antonia Valle opened La Fiesta on the West Side to serve recipes from Michoacán. 10 a.m. Info.

The Local: The Strongsville spot rolls out music by Havana Nights, salsa dancing, all you can eat tacos/nachos and endless margarita/tequila deals. 5 p.m. Info.

Nuevo Modern Mexican: Annual Cinco patio party on East Ninth rolls out a pig roast, drink deals and Latin tunes. Noon. Info.

Don Ramon: The murals and décor say ole – and the fajitas and margaritas hit the spot at this Parma Heights outpost. 11 a.m. Info.

Momocho: Is there a place with a wider selection of tequila in town? Check out the specialty margaritas, too. 4 p.m. in Ohio City. Info.

Villa y Zapata: About as traditional as you can get – authentic food, old-school vibes and a margarita for the ages at this West Side gem. 11 a.m. Info.

Las Dos Fronteras: So many Mexican spots with nuevo concepts… Looks like nothing has changed at this Clark-Fulton gem in a long time.11 a.m.  Info.

Blue Habanero: The Gordon Square, mod-Mex spot starts the party at 11 a.m. with a themed menu. Info.

Goodtime III: The lake and river cruise celebrates Cinco de Mayo with salsa dancing and views of the skyline. 7:30 p.m. Info.

The war on Iran is as unpopular as the Vietnam War was in the 1970s, according to a new poll.

The parallel is poignant on the anniversary of the Kent State massacre.

On May 4, 1970, four unarmed students were killed and nine wounded when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on protestors.

It marked a turning point in the antiwar movement, sparked national outrage and the largest student strike in U.S. history: four million.

“Everything changed after Kent State,” says Jerry Casale, of legendary Akron band Devo.

A KSU student, he went on to form Devo with fellow Kent grad, Mark Mothersbaugh.

“I saw it when it happened and two of my friends died that day,” he says. “It brought existential urgency to what we were feeling.”

“We used to talk about de-evolution as a philosophical theory, but that day was a collective nervous breakdown that made us see, first-hand, that Devo was real.”
