Waste to Wildlife: Former garbage dump is Cleveland’s most hidden natural beauty

Photos by John Petkovic. Historical photos via Cleveland Memory Project.
The sound of birds and crickets, rustling rabbits, deer and squirrels provide a Zen-like soundtrack. The flowers and trees bring rich, lush colors. A stroll through the 88-acre natural beauty makes for a serene experience far from the city.
It’s hard to imagine that you’re only five miles from downtown in what was once the area’s most notorious garbage dump.
The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve is one of the city’s greatest turnaround stories – not to mention a hidden beauty whose trails are unknown to most residents.
For most of the 20th century, this 88-acre leafy plot of natural wonders next to Gordon Park was a landfill – polluted with 1,000 trucks of residential trash each day, junked cars and even decommissioned ships.
Incinerated garbage would create smog so thick that it would overwhelmed drivers on the Shoreway.
Then a natural miracle took place.
The dumping ended in 1999. The healing process began. Birds arrived, other wildlife followed.
Less than 30 years later, it’s a sanctuary that is home to lush vegetation, 290 species of birds, wild turkeys and stellar views of the lake.
Fall foliage season coming and hitting its peak over the next month, the preserve offers stellar views of changing leaves – and a chance to explore one of Cleveland’s great comeback stories.
Food & Wine names Cordelia’s Vinnie Cimino one of 2025’s Best New Chefs

It’s been a whirlwind year for Vinnie Cimino.
The chef and co-owner of Cordelia has collaborated with Swenson’s. He’s revealed plans to open a new spot in Hingetown with business Andrew Watts. And he was a James A. Beard finalist.
And now this: Cimino has one of 10 best new chefs in the U.S. by Food & Wine, which praises Cordelia’s “Midwest Nice” approach to cuisine.
“The chef’s unabashed homage to the culture, cuisine, and communities of a Midwest is a study in fun and flavor,” says Food & Wine.
Cimino responded to the news with a post: “17+ years of grinding, the road was never straight, the nights were always long, and grateful for every damn bit of it… Incredibly honored to represent my Cleveland + Akron communities. Hard work pays off + dreams do come true!”
Bad news for job hunters. Good news for the housing market?

216 Scoop Chart
The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised job numbers for April 2024 to March 2025 downward by 911,000 – the largest decrease since 2009, during the Great Recession.
It follows an August jobs report that shows an increase of only 22,000 jobs, below estimates. Also, June's job numbers were revised lower by 27,000 to a net loss of 13,000.
Feeble jobs numbers have amplified fears of an economic slowdown – and increased pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.
It could be good news for the housing market, says John Neely, a realtor for RE/MAX-Crossroads.
“We’ve already seen rates dropping in anticipation, but a half-point rate cut would be wonderful,” says Neely. “We’ve seen increases in inventory and a lot of buyers are holding out. It’s a great time to buy, and you’ll more buyers with lower rates.”
