  • Physical gold sits outside inflation and banking risk

Gordon Park Rises Again: From Forgotten Gem to Lakeside Glory

It was a magnet for swimmers, picnickers, boaters and fishermen when it opened in the 1893.

Popular with crowds yet serene, Gordon Park was a joyful way to interact with nature.

Then came the decline…

The construction of I-90 in the 1960s split the 122-acre park in two. Water pollution made swimming in it unsafe. There was crime, trash and neglect.

Cleveland Metroparks aims to bring it back to glory.

Construction has started on a $10 million renovation project that will add new green space, walking paths, playgrounds, a picnic pavilion, grilling areas, lighting, and upgrades to the parking lots.

It’s the kind of community-driven effort that Metroparks has used in a variety of projects that have transformed the shoreline from a neglected, industrial relic into a vibrant, accessible public asset.

A rejuvenated Gordon Park – to be completed by summer 2027 – will sync up with beautification efforts at the East 55th Marina (completed this year) and the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve (managed by the Port of Cleveland).

The latter, once a garbage dump, is now a hub for birding, hiking and diverse animal and plant habitats.

That part of the shoreline was once written off for dead.

Now, it provides a template to the city for its plans to transform downtown’s lakefront – one that stresses public lands over retail, housing, golf courses and music venues.

Leather, Lights & Liberation: How Cleveland's Gay Nightlife Thrived Against the Odds

Gay culture has entered into the mainstream. But for decades, Cleveland's gay and straight scenes have mingled to create a vibrant nightlife.

In tomorrow’s 216 Insider, we look at the clubs and magazines that thrived long before the gay scene was accepted by straight American.

Cleveland's nightlife thrived for years in the gay scene – even as the city experienced a decline, not to mention a 23.6 percent population loss, in the 1970s.

There were clubs like the Leather Stallion, one of America’s oldest leather bars. Or Traxx, Numbers, 620 Club – vital spaces for socializing, dancing, and connection amid an otherwise hostile culture.

There were magazines, too, like Gear.

These places fostered and brought pride to a community before there was Pride.

Painful but Smart: Browns Earn High Marks for Blockbuster Garrett Deal

Myles Garrett broke the single game sack record January 4, in what would be his last game as a  Cleveland Brown.

He gave fans something to cheer for when there was little else worthy of it and will always be one of the greatest athletes to wear a Cleveland jersey.

But the Rams trade was a move that needed to be made.

  • He was 30 and in his prime, but on a different timeline than the go-young Browns.

  • They received Jared Verse – a 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year honoree, with two Pro Bowls.

  • Verse has 99 QB pressures since entering the league, behind only Micah Parsons and Myles Garrett.

  • They received picks, including a 1st in 2027, a strong draft – especially for QBs.

It’s why the Browns received high grades for the trade from ESPN (A), Sporting News (A+), The Athletic (A+).

Cleveland Fed's Hammack Sounds Inflation Alarm: Higher Rates Next?

Inflation hits everyone, but low earners are bearing the burden of high energy and food price.

Which is why Beth Hammack wants interest rates to remain steady – and go up should inflation continue surging.

In a speech to the City Club, the Cleveland Fed governor warned that tariffs and Iran War pose a double threat to the economy.

"What I've heard from business contacts, particularly in the energy sector, is that even if the (Strait of Hormuz) was opened tomorrow, it's going to be months before we actually rebuild that flow of oil," she said.

Inflation is increasingly outpacing American incomes:

Real disposable income fell -1.1% YoY in April, the biggest decline since October 2022 – even as inflation hits its highest levels in two years (3.8%).

"The picture for inflation is not encouraging. Inflation is too high and is moving higher," she said.

Optimism that the Fed would lower rates have tanked since the war – with odds hitting 37% that it would actually raise rates.

VINTAGE CLEVELAND

More than 25,000 fans – double the usual count – showed up to partake in Ten Cent Beer Night and watch the Tribe play the Rangers on June 4, 1974. By the ninth inning, more than 200 drunks rushed the field – leading to 15 minutes of infamy. The riot featured fights, flying cans, flashing knives, firecrackers, bloodied fans and players and clouds of marijuana smoke.
