Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were a couple of sci-fi buffs at Glenville High School daydreaming about adventure, faraway places and larger-than-life characters.
They had an idea for a comic strip and pitched it to newspapers. Not sensational enough, they were told. So, they dug deeper and imagined a hero superhuman strength and bullet-proof skin.
Superman was born – and on this day in 1938, D.C. Comics introduced the Man of Steel to the world.
This year’s celebration of Superman Day is extra special with “Superman,” which was shot in Cleveland and throughout Ohio, hitting theaters on July 11.
Stores like Carol & John’s Comic Shop, 17462 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, will be offering reproductions of the first issue.
The Greater Cleveland Film Commission is raffling off exclusive merchandise signed by the director James Gunn and stars David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane). For info, go here.
The Guardians will host D.C.’s Superman Night on Wednesday, July 23.
The Siegel and Shuster Society has launched a project to build a tribute plaza for the Huntington Convention Center that includes an 18-foot statue of Superman and tributes to Siegel and Shuster.
Even Frommers getting in on the Supermania: The travel guide has rolled out a tour of Superman’s Cleveland.
It features historical sites like Siegel’s family home (10622 Kimberly Avenue, Cleveland) and an exhibit at the Cleveland Public Library, and downtown filming locations like the Arcade, Leader Building and Terminal Tower.

Get ready to go game crazy. The Arcade on Detroit is hitting Lakewood.
At 4 p.m. today, the retro barcade featuring classic games, craft beers, classic cocktails and food will open its doors at 14810 Detroit Avenue.
The space was the home of Deagan’s Kitchen + Bar for 13 years, which closed in 2023. It was also the short-lived home of Solstice.
The Arcade, co-owned by Deagan’s former owner Dan Deagan will roll out a variety of old-school and new video, tabletop and pinball games, as well as foosball, shuffleboard, billiards and Skee-Ball. The menu features classic bar food like pizza and pretzels.
It’s a new concept for Deagan, but not for this part of Lakewood. For almost seven years, this part of Detroit Avenue was home to 16-bit Bar + Arcade, a popular barcade that moved to Ohio City in 2021. More info here.

U.S. homes are selling at the slowest pace since 2019, according to a new study by Redfin.
High prices, soft demand and rising supply have conspired to cool down the market. While Cleveland has shown signs slowing, it is more resilient compared to other markets.
Houses are sitting for 42-46 days in the Cleveland metro area, but it leads the country in YOY price appreciation at 11.8% -- because it’s one of the top five undervalued housing markets in the country, with houses selling at an average median price around $135k.
The data:
The typical U.S. home under contract in March was on the market for 47 days—the longest period for any March since 2019. The typical home was selling in less than half that time during the peak of the pandemic homebuying frenzy.
Only 27% of homes sold above list price, the lowest share since 2020.
The median sale price hit $431K, up 2.5% year-over-year -- the slowest price growth in 18 months.
The typical home sold roughly 1% less than its list price in March.
List prices are growing faster than sale prices, as sellers overprice their homes, causing them to sit on the market.
The total number of homes for sale hit the highest level in five years in March. They climbed 0.1% month over month and 14.1% year over year.
With active listings at a five-year high and mortgage rates still elevated; buyers have more choices—but sellers clinging to peak pricing are missing the mark.
“Tariff fears and widespread economic uncertainty are making homebuyers nervous, so if sellers don’t lower their price expectations, home sales may slow in the coming months,” according to Redfin.

The playoff schedule is out. The Cavs will play their first playoff game on Sunday.
The Cavs still don’t know which team they’ll be playing; that’ll be determined tonight when the Miami Heat take on the Atlanta Hawks.
But they’re happy that they won’t be facing Orlando, which took the seventh seed with a win over the Hawks – earning it a matchup against the Celtics.
Orlando grabs and hacks more than any other team in the NBA and would’ve been a more physical matchup than either the Heat or Hawks. The last thing the Cavs want is a brawl of a series in the first round.
Sunday’s game starts at 7 p.m. at Rocket Arena – followed by a home game Weds. April 23, at 7:30. For the rest of schedule, go here.

Is he coming or staying home? Soccer fans have been asking that question in advance of Saturday’s Columbus Crew match against Inter Miami CF at Huntington Bank Field.
Of course, the question refers to 37-year-old soccer legend Lionel Messi, who’s been dealing with a low-grade adductor injury that kept him from the latest round of World Cup qualifiers with Argentina's national team during latest FIFA international window from March 17-25.
All indications are he that he will be in the starting lineup for one of the MLS’s most anticipated games of the season.
Tickets for the 4:30 p.m. match are still available and run $79-$363. Go here.
