IN THE NEWS

What’s next for Chewy, the viral meth raccoon from Akron

Photo courtesy Springfield Township Police Department

Chewy the Raccoon became a viral sensation when police in Springfield Township conducted a traffic stop and found him sucking on a meth pipe.

His owner, Akron resident Victoria Vidal, was pulled over and found to have an active warrant – not to mention her mother, two dogs and the feisty critter in her SUV.

The discovery of meth and crack cocaine led to an arrest of Vidal for drug charges. The focus then shifted to Chewy, an Ohio resident with no history of drug use.

"The raccoon had dug a hole into a Sheetz bag that was on the driver's seat as well," arresting officer Austin Branham said.

Branham removed one pipe from Chewy's mouth and another from its hand. He added that Chewy seemed "extremely playful."

So, what’s next for the viral sensation?

  • Ohio is one of 16 states in the country where it is legal to own a raccoon, but it is highly regulated.

  • While more intelligent than dogs and cats, and capable of problem solving and remembering details for three years, it is illegal to capture and keep wild raccoons as pets.

  •  They’re legal if bred in captivity, but you must have a license and a veterinarian’s certificate stating they are disease-free. Ohio allows the sale of baby raccoons. Most go for $200.

  • Vidal’s father showed up with a dog crate and Chewy was released into the care of the mother. An arresting police officer estimated the family had Chewy from, “probably right around birth.”

  • Police contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to make sure the owners had proper paperwork – and will help the family obtain it or find a new home for Chewy.

Oh, yes, it’s Devo: Legendary Akron band brings power domes to Cleveland

Photos courtesy of Devo

Break out those old yellow jump suits, red power domes and spud-boy antics… Oh, no, I mean, oh, yes, it’s Devo.

The legendary Akron band that turned an anti-Darwinian "de-evolution" concept into a pop phenomenon will hit Cleveland Masonic Auditorium at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The band’s ‘50 Years of De-Evolution… Continued’ Tour spans five decades of musical mischief – and will include misfit anthems “Whip It,” “Girl U Want,” "Uncontrollable Urge” and “Mongoloid.”

Formed in 1973, the band of visual artists mixed catchy songs with avant-garde sensibilities and the industrial sounds of Akron. The de-evolution theory took a more confrontational turn after the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970.

“Two of my friends died that day,” says Devo co-founder Jerry Casale. “We used to talk about de-evolution as a philosophical theory, but that day was a collective nervous breakdown that made us see, first-hand, that Devo was real.” Ticket info here.

Feed your head: CPL celebrates 100 years with Alice in Wonderland bash

Yes, there are books – more than 11 million on paper and microfilm. But the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library is more than a warehouse of words.

Built 100 years ago for $5 million, the Beaux-Arts style building is an architectural wonder and a symbol of Cleveland’s rise to power.

It was a product of a 1920s construction boom and sits amid iconic buildings like the Terminal Tower, Cleveland Federal Reserve, Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S Courthouse, the Huntington and Superior buildings and the Arcade.

Cleveland was the fifth largest city in the country then and philanthropically minded industrialists saw “The People’s University” as central to their vision of a progressive city.

It still is – for a variety of reasons, says John Skrtic, the library’s chief of collections and special projects.

“We used to be transactional; you come to get a book,” he says. “They still come for books, but also for WIFI, kids’ lunches and our tech space to make projects with our 3-D printers.”

They also come for architecture. Cleveland’s 1920s buildings have been instrumental in attracting films, including the “Superman,” out this July.

“We’ve become a tourist destination, because this building is so pristine,” he adds. “We have so many people coming to take wedding or prom photos.”

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the main branch will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an Alice in Wonderland-themed party that includes activities and stories, cupcakes and mocktails, and an Alice Garden party. More here.

The 216 Rundown

No brunch, no reservations? Last-minute ideas to make mom’s day

You don’t need brunch to say, ‘I love you.’  She’d probably rather spend the day together. Here are some last-minute, low-cost ideas:

Mother's Day at the Zoo: The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s newborn sloth bear cub Suhani will spend her first Mother’s Day with Shiva. Feel free to join them as the zoo spotlight resident animal moms and their kids.  Also, the zoo is offering free admission to moms on Sunday.

Walk around Little Italy: Take mom for a stroll through one of Cleveland’s most charming areas, then hit one of the Mayfield Road restaurants and bakeries for pizza, cannoli, cake and espresso.

Cleveland Museum of Art: Have an artful time checking out the galleries and the atrium, grab a bite in the Provence Café – then head to Wade Lagoon for photos.

Cleveland Botanical Garden: The flowers are in full bloom and the 10 acres of gardens make for a perfect family stroll – especially the Hershey Children’s the Japanese gardens.

Lake View Cemetery: The sprawling resting place of famous Clevelanders --John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, Harvey Pekar and James A. Garfield – is especially beautiful this time of year. And don’t forget Daffodil Hill.

Dress like a Renaissance post-industrialist: Ingenuity ball

Since 2004, Ingenuity Cleveland has thrown some of the area’s most interesting happenings by intersecting the arts with technology.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, the creator collective will host Ingenuity Bal – an artful gala with eccentric themes that inspires attendees to don stylish or just strange outfits.

The annual fundraiser pays homage to eccentric arts parties that were thrown in Cleveland from the 1910s to 1940s. It also boasts an artful theme – ‘Rust Belt Renaissance’ – that crosses post-industrialism with the Renaissance Era. More info here.

NOTES ON A COCKTAIL NAPKIN

Sports, Entertainment, & Culture

If the Cavs are done, why are oddsmakers betting on a win?

Before you go praying to the patron saint of lost causes – yeah, St. Jude – remember that sports always seem to turn on a dime just when you’re about to give up.

At 7:30 tonight, the Cavs are faced with a must-win against the Pacers after going down 0-2 in the series. Oddsmakers are favoring the Cavs by 2.5 points – what does the money know?

"I have no doubt everybody in the locker room is ready for Friday. It sucks. It stings, but we've got to go out there and take care of business,” said Donovan Mitchell, after Tuesday’s 120-119 heartbreaking loss.

Note: He didn’t exclude Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and DeAndre Hunter.

In his first comment after Game 2, Kenny Atkinson said, “I love how they competed. I love how they fought. We need to get guys back.

Questions for Game 3:

  • Will the wounded step up after Mitchell and Atkinson’s comments?

  • Can the Cavs control the pace and slow the game down, as they did for 42 minutes on Tuesday?

  • Will Kenny Atkinson go deeper into his bench to keep guys fresh?

  • Can Ty Jerome really play any worse than he did Tuesday?
