Guardians Do-or-Die Homestand: Urgency Hits as Season Hangs by a Thread

They pull you back in. Then the rug pull. Then they pull you in again.
Ups, downs, and one of the most frustrating seasons in recent memory.
And yet the Guardians are only a half-game behind the White Sox in the Central Division after Sunday’s 9-2 win over the Twins.
Now it’s do-or-die time.
At 6:40 tonight, they open a three-game series against Chicago in a final homestand that includes three games this weekend against the A’s.
Suddenly, the Guardians have a sense of urgency:
Gavin Williams didn’t pitch Saturday against the Twins so he could face the White Sox tonight.
Then the rug pull: The Guards lost Saturday, thanks by reliever Franco Aleman – who gave up four runs and five hits and beaned two batters in 2/3 of an inning.
We’ve seen so many single-inning pitching blow-ups in the last three weeks.
So, where’s the urgency from manager Steven Vogt?
He’s allowed games to spin out of control with a team that has a hard time scoring runs.
Twelve games to go. Every inning counts from here on in.

From the Wright Brothers 1903 flight to NASA Glenn’s pivotal role to Artemis II’s historic flight to Orion in April, our ties to the stars and moon go far and deep.
In 1920, the Warner & Swasey Observatory in East Cleveland housed the largest telescope in the country. Now abandoned, it’s a magnet for urban explorers. Bring your camera.
In 1941, NASA’s predecessor establishes the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory.
It was renamed the Glenn Research Center in 1999 – after Ohio-born John H. Glenn Jr., the first American to orbit Earth aboard Friendship 7.
The area gave birth to two other astronauts: Clevelander James A. “Jim” Lovell Jr. (Gemini 7) and Euclid native Sunita Williams (International Space Station).
There’s also Hollywood most famous astronaut -- Cleveland native Keir Dullea, who starred in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey.”

The Great Lakes Science Center celebrates all week, and hosts NASA Discovery Days on Friday-Saturday.
NASA Glenn at Hopkins Airport: The exhibit highlights the history of the Cleveland facility.
Cleveland Space Race: The 5K run hits Glenn’s campus at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi silent classic ‘Metropolis’ imagined a dystopian future corrupted by extreme wealth disparity, AI-like automation and machines-gone-wild. It’s set in 2026. Hmm…
Well, that was a quite the reversal… From the cure for cancer to ‘The Terminator.’
On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a bleak warning about AI:
"There are real dangers," wrote Amodei. "For too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks."
Rogue AI agents have escaped from digital ‘cages’ and covertly coordinated with one another to launch cyberattacks.
A similar AI “swarm” could take over the internet, create an autonomous network of compromised computers and threaten humanity.
Sam Altman and Elon Musk – of OpenAI and xAI, respectively – agree.
Here’s where it gets interesting, er, weird:
They’re calling for a pause on AI, a kill switch, and that “democratic countries” – i.e., U.S.A. – set safety standards and ask “authoritarian governments” to follow them.
In other words, lock out China (mentioned 10 times by Amodei) -- whose cheaper, open-source models have pressured token prices and profit margins for U.S. companies.
So, is it:
The danger of AI?
Or, creating a U.S. government-supervised cartel that protects them from liability and Chinese competition?
Interesting timing: Anthropic just announced that it will IPO on Nasdaq.
🤖 What is really driving the sudden AI safety warnings from Amodei, Altman and Musk?
- ⚠️ Genuine fear: rogue AI agents covertly coordinating cyberattacks is a real and documented threat
- 🇨🇳 Protecting market share: locking out Chinese open-source models under the cover of safety standards is the actual goal
- 🏦 The IPO timing: Anthropic announcing a Nasdaq listing the same week as a doom warning is a remarkable coincidence
- 🎯 All three at once: the danger is real AND the cartel play is real AND the IPO is real

A cretinous freak yanked his head out of his torso as a ghoul summoned us into the lair.
Inside, the Prince of Darkness bellowed, “Satan’s sitting there, he’s smiling… Oh, no, no! Please, God help me!”
And there I was sucking on a blood bag, having a dandy ol’ time as the DJ played Black Sabbath.
Egads, it’s Carnevil — the just-opened Halloween pop-up bar at Amici’s in North Royalton.
The Bozo’s Blood Bag vodka cocktail comes in, yes, a blood bag.
The mutant at the kissing, er, ‘killing booth’ obviously had one too many.
The potion headlines a macabre menu of drinks like a fruity syringe shot and snacks that would smack the lips of a zombie – from pasta to poppers, meatballs and chicken.
A lobotomized maniac swung from the ceiling alongside dismembered body parts as mortals munched and partied.
The detached hand swung to the beat of ‘Thriller.’ Must be the devil’s work.
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
