IN THE NEWS

Egads, a night of ghastly ghoulishness in Cleveland’s most haunted castle?

Franklin Castle will host tours and events during ooky-spooky season. And now you can win a contest to win an overnight stay at the storied house.

Cutwater Spirits is conducting a sweepstakes that awards winners an overnight stay for two in the storied mansion.

To enter, go here

Built in 1881 by industrialist Hannes Tiedemann, the four-story stone mansion is the stuff of ghastly, ghostly legend.

In the early days, several of his children died in the home under mysterious circumstances. In later years, the tunnels and hidden passages allegedly made it a Prohibition favorite.

It was also said to be a meeting place for local members of the Nazi Party and was the scene of a massacre at a Socialist party meeting in the ‘30s. Oh, and decades later, human bones were also allegedly found behind a wall.

You must be 21 to enter the contest. Winners get travel accommodations, a tour and ghost-hunting gear.

First look: Worldly eateries bring flavors of Georgia, Yemen to Cleveland

Photos of Georgian Bakery Tiflis by John Petkovic.

Trendy districts and chefs grab headlines, but it’s the faraway flavors of international cuisines that provide the most unique eateries in the food scene.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a place as unique as Georgian Bakery Tiflis.

The just-opened Parma Heights eatery serves dishes from Georgia — a country in the Caucasus region that sits at the intersection of Europe and Asia.

GBT boasts offerings that mix meats and vegetables with nuts, cheese and dough.  Among them is a stellar eggplant-walnut dish and khachapuri — cheese-filled breads that are some of the tastiest things you’ll find in Cleveland.

“Georgia has a rich history of food and wine,” says owner George Chincharauli, a Tiblisi native who moved to America two years ago. “We plan on adding soups, salads and kebabs, so I can give people a chance to try this unique food from my country.”

A taste of Yemen

Yemeni cuisine travels under the radar in Cleveland. That’s about to change when Qahwah House opens today in North Olmsted.

The cafe and eatery offers an aromatic mix of coffees, teas and desserts.

While coffee originated in Ethiopia, it was cultivated and turned into a beverage in Yemen. The coffee is renowned for its complex earthiness and tones of dried fruit often accompanied by cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

Qahwah serves a variety of Yemeni favorites: Mufawar, Qishr and Adeni chai.

All three pair well with the pastries — especially the Honeycomb. It features small buns baked in honeycomb pattern featuring cream cheese and honeyed syrup. More info.

The most amazing comeback story in sports?

Cleveland Guardians

While Cleveland sports talkers are obsessing about the Browns quarterbacks… Let’s talk Guards ball.

Two pitchers banished for the season. Starting centerfielder hurt, barely plays. A 10-game losing streak, followed by a 1-9 streak. Things get so ugly that the catcher appears in three games — to pitch. Oh, it’s the worst hitting team in MLB.

And yet the Guardians are one of sports’ most amazing comeback stories — with an unlikely cast of contributors stepping up: Bo Naylor, CJ Kayfus, Angel Martinez, even Jhonkensy Noel and Tim Herrin.

After sweeping the Tigers — and only 3.5 games behind them in the Central Division… After being down 15.5 games in July.

The team heads to Minnesota to take on the Twins in a four-game series, today through Sunday. They play the Tigers three more times at home Tuesday through Thursday.

Back from the underground for DIY movie fest

Those were different times — before streaming, when underground filmmakers showed their stuff in clubs, theaters and DIY festivals.

Clevelander Matthew T. and Angelino Marcel deJure would travel to such soirees… as fans and aspiring filmmakers.

Then a light came on: Why not start their own festival?

In 2000, they launched the 20,000 Leagues Under the Industry Film Festival at now-closed Speak in Tongues

For years, they exhibited experimental shorts and features. Then came streaming.

“It got to be where you could see anything on YouTube, so we stopped,” says T. “But we figured, ’Why not do it again?’”

Tonight and Saturday, 20,000 Leagues return at the Treelawn.

“We started talking about it and then these movies came into his lap,” says T., referring to two cult films that anchor the fest.

On Friday, it’s “40 Watts from Nowhere,” Sue Carpenter’s doc about a pioneering L.A. pirate radio station. Saturday, is headlined by “The Secret Lives of Bill Bartell” — about the White Flag singer.

Both nights feature shorts and an old staple: “Heavy Metal Parking Lot.” Info.
