First look: Batuqui celebrates 10th anniversary as it prepares for move to former church

Photos of the new Batuqui location by Matheus Areas
Since she was 12, Carla Batista loved cooking alongside her mother for friends and family in Brazil.
She was reminded of those days when she came to America in 2000, and again when she opened Batuqui 10 years ago with her partner, Gustavo Nogueira.
After all, the beloved Brazilian eatery is in an old Victorian house that seats 38 and boasts an intimate, cozy feel and a charming patio that runs from porch to the sidewalk.
On Friday, Batuqui will celebrate its 10th anniversary with food and drink specials, live music and a party that marks the past Β and looks ahead to a new era.
In a matter of weeks, Batista and Nogueira will move Batuqui to the former St. Paulβs Evangelical Church β located a one-minute walk away in Larchmere.
βWeβve grown so much,β says Batista. βWe had seven employees when we started and now have 48. We served 30,000 fish stews last year from this tiny 90-square-foot kitchen β itβs crazy.β
The 1922 Craftsman-style church is rich with arched ceilings, rustic beams and stained-glass windows. It offers enough space for 160 seats, two bars and a 1,100-square-foot kitchen.
βWeβll be able to do lunch buffets and brunches and parties and will have a supermarket that features frozen items that people can take home,β she says. βSo many people tell me that theyβve fallen in love with our food and try to cook it at home or have traveled to Brazil to experience the culture.β
The market will feature popular stews -- moqueca, feijoada, xim xim. Batista will look to add fusion-style items for brunches and parties.
But the church offers more than more dining choices.
βI love history and old buildings and the feeling you get when you walk into them,β says Batista. βThe house was great, but now weβll have a beautiful old church and the space to do cool, new things.β

Final βSupermanβ trailer drops today; new Krypto ad shines light on Cleveland

The world will get more superhero shots of Cleveland when the full βSupermanβ trailer is released today.
Yesterday, the filmβs director James Gunn took to social media to hype the clip: βI've been waiting too long to share this with you all!β
Ah, but thatβs not all.
Krypto is also getting in on the action. Supermanβs super-pooch has scored an ad with Milk-Bone that shows him playing on Superior Avenue with Mister Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi), the genius inventor who appears in the film. Β Krypto is also seen chowing on biscuits in front of a pet score by Public Square.
The ad is part of a tie-in that includes limited-edition biscuits and a comic book inspired by the rambunctious pup.
βWith the βSupermanβ partnership, Milk-Bone is honoring the strength, loyalty and love that our four-legged companions show us every day,β said Gail Hollander, of Milk-Bone, which is owned by Orrville, Ohio-based J.M. Smucker.
βSupermanβ opens July 11. Check out the Krypto clip here.
Cavs eliminated in the second round, again: Anatomy of a disastrous end

Photos courtesy Cleveland Cavaliers/NBA
The Cavs picked a bad time to play their worst basketball of the season.
They were outworked and outsmarted for much of the series by Indiana -- including last nightβs 114-105 loss that eliminated Cleveland in the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Injuries to Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, DeAndre Hunter and Donovan Mitchell played a factor. But ultimately, the Cavs couldnβt get a basket or prevent the Pacers from scoring one when they had two.
Autopsy of a disastrous end to the season:
The Cavs traded for DeAndre Hunter to deal with a lack of physicality and inability to counter fast-paced teamsβflaws that were exposed by three regular season losses to the Pacers.
The team finished Game 5 shooting an abysmal 25.7% from three -- the fourth time in this series that they finished under 30% shooting from three.
Donovan Mitchell scored in bunches throughout the series β but the over-reliance on him stifled ball movement. The Cavs were at their best during the regular season when he didnβt have to carry the team.
The team dominated the Pacers when the offense used cuts and passes, and when Mobley and Jarrett Allen could score around the basket. Using both was integral in creating space on perimeter, which made the Cavs the leagueβs best three-point shooting team.

Kiss concluded its βEnd of the Road World Tourβ in December 2023 and Gene Simmons was, like, βWhat the hell am I gonna do know?β He opted for the thing he knows best. βI tried to stay away from being on stage, but itβs too much fun,β he said before embarking on a solo tour that brings him to MGM Northfield Park β 7:30 tonight. West Side Market breaks ground on $68 million renovationΒ
The future is now. The city has broken ground on the much-anticipated West Side Market revitalization project.
βThis is not just Clevelandβs market, not just the regionβs market, this is the stateβs market," said Mayor Justin M. Bibb at the groundbreaking event.
The beloved institution is one of the cityβs biggest tourist destinations -- attracting 800,000 visitors annually, one-third of them tourists from outside of Northeast Ohio.
The first phase of the $68 million dollar makeover starts with the largely vacant produce hall between the market and parking lot and will deal with structural issues.
Future phases include:
Renovation of the North Arcade along West 25th Street, which will become a prepared foods hall with eight vendor spaces, two full-service bars, and extended operating hours to attract dinner crowds.
Turning the adjacent alleyway of the market into a landscaped courtyard with outdoor seating.
Creating an event space and seating for 100 on the second floor of the mezzanine area.
