First look: Flower Child’s new location transforms vintage shop into cultural emporium

Photos by John Petkovic
For 25 years, Flower Child has been the city’s preeminent vintage shop – a snug space on Clifton Avenue filled with collections of mid-century artifacts and furniture, hip clothes and pop curiosities.
It opens a new chapter on Wednesday in a new location 1,584 feet and what feels like a world away.
This Flower Child is an emporium of 20th century culture that also features food trucks, outside eating areas and events.
“We had 7,000 square feet and now we have 12,000 for furniture, magazines, clothes, art, vendors and Christmas and kitchen rooms,” says owner Joe Valenti, during a tour of the place.
Located in a former car dealership, it’s an anything-goes time capsule.
Check out the Hough Bakery display with an animatronic figure; the 1967 stove made famous by “Bewitched”; an actual boat that hung from the ceiling of Macy’s.
Valenti’s love of all things vintage was piqued by thrift-store runs as a cash-strapped student attending Cleveland Institute of Art in the ‘80s.
“Things run between $5 and $500, so there’s something for everyone,” he says. “I see this place as a more of a destination where you can hang out for the day.”
Valenti’s has bigger plans: a phase-two expansion into the other half of the former dealership.
“We’ll have month flea markets, tattoo shows, events,” says Valenti. “We have a lot more room to play with.”
Cleveland, are you ready for your close-up?

“Lost & Found in Cleveland” set attendance records when it drew 2,500 people for its Midwest premiere in March at the Cleveland International Film Festival.
After all, the heartfelt indie flick about five locals whose lives collide at an antiques show was shot all over town in 2023: Playhouse Square, Public Square, Malley’s Chocolates, West Side Market, Bartleby’s and Kiln restaurants, Discount Drug Mart.
The love letter to Cleveland starring Martin Sheen, Dennis Haysbert and Liza Weil opens in 500 theaters across the country Friday.
Clevelanders will celebrate early.
On Wednesday, the West Side Market hosts Taste of Lost & Found in Cleveland Day, with vendors offering pop-ups, samples and memorabilia. Also, Bartleby’s and Kiln will serve movie-inspired specials this week.
Sushi? One of the city’s widest selections hits Coventry

Coventry Village has seen waves of makeovers, with bars, restaurants, shops and clubs coming and going.
Yet, there was always Hunan – well, until Sept., when it closed at a 38-year run.
There was the competition from an increasing number of Asian restaurants and that it was more a dated destination rather than a stop en route to somewhere else.
Mizu, which opens today in the old Hunan spot, will offer more the latter.
For 15 years, the Parma flagship bar-restaurant gained a dedicated following for what might be the widest selection of sushi in the city – along with eclectic selection of teriyaki, noodle bowls, tempura and appetizers and a fine Happy Hour.

Elements of PSL survey sent to ticket-holders by Cleveland Browns
Watson trade? This deal is even worse — for Browns fans
The Browns are on the hook for the worst contract in the worst trade in NFL history -- and for half of the $2.4 billion domed stadium in Brook Park.
But help is on the way… And the degree to which fans are being asked to chip in is a shocker.
The Browns sent out a survey to fans to see what they’d be willing to pay for personal seat licenses – which the Browns call "the right and responsibility" to buy season tickets in perpetuity. (Might have to wait that long for a Super Bowl.)
The PSLs start at $500 for corner nose-bleeders and hit, whoa, $149,300 for Field Club VIPs.
OK, at least they didn’t go full on $150k, which would be a bridge too far.
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
Lines form outside of Hough Bakery, 1945. The iconic Cleveland business is beloved by generations and there is a tribute to it at Flower Child, the vintage emporium that opens in its new location Wednesday.
