For decades, civic leaders tossed around lofty ideas about transforming the lakefront. Getting something done was another story. The neglect was too deep – and pollution, a lack of safety and overall apathy seemed too big to overcome.
Then came Cleveland Metroparks – one of the area’s great success stories.
Since taking over management of the Lake Erie lakefront in 2013, it has transformed the shoreline from a neglected, industrial relic into a vibrant, accessible public asset by breaking it up into a series of manageable projects.
Say bon voyage for the latest endeavor: Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center.
Th $18.5 million project will create the first community sailing center of its kind along Lake Erie in Ohio. It provides “unprecedented public access and sailing opportunities to the region,” according to Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian M. Zimmerman.
Set to open in 2026, it will feature learning spaces, community areas, concessions, dining and places to soak in views of the lake.
In other words, the project mixes beautification and safety measures with amenities and activities to connect people with areas many of them never knew – because they were dead zones for so long.
It’s a template Metroparks has used in a variety of projects along the Cuyahoga and the lake – from Merwin’s Wharf in Rivergate Park (2014) to Edgewater Beach House (2017) to Euclid Beach Pier (2018) to Wendy Park Bridge (2021).

Ever dream of shooting free throws like Shaq? Well, um, OK, probably not. After all, he was one of the worst free-throw shooters in NBA history.
But you can own the basketball court where he spent many grueling (and futile) hours practicing free throws while playing for the Cavs in 2009-2010.
The Richfield home where Shaq once lived is on sale for a mere $2.75 million.
The 12,300-square-foot hulk features, yes, a full indoor court, along with five bedrooms, six bathrooms and sprawling kitchen and dining areas. It also rolls out a 400-gallon aquarium, movie theater, pub-style bar, cigar lounge and a wine room that stores 400 bottles.
The Shaq of Houses at 3377 East Galloway Drive has appeared in an episode of “Total Divas” -- where WWE wrestler and Parma native the Miz tries to convince his wife, former wrestler Maryse, to buy the house so they could move from California to Ohio.
“This house is amazing, but it’s in Cleveland,” she says, before vetoing the idea.
Her loss could be your gain.
“This is more than a home, it is a legacy property,” says the Agency, which is handling the listing. “Bold, beautiful, and absolutely one-of-a-kind.”

Cedar Point promised a lot of new attractions for this season. This one came as a complete surprise.
Guests were taken aback when a pack of alpacas busted out of the park’s petting zoo on Friday and took a walk on the wild side. They strolled along the railroad tracks behind the popular Millennium Force roller coaster, according to a Cedar Point spokesperson.
It was the third insurrection on the animal farm in less than a year. Last June, two camels and 15 goats escaped the Barnyard in two separate incidents.
No one was hurt in any of the incidents – though the camel escapade went viral when a camel almost kicked a man in motorized wheelchair. Video here.
As a result, the park adopted additional safety measures to lock down the Barnyard, which is also home to sheep, cows, pigs and donkeys.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Cleveland Metroparks welcomed a joey – the first offspring of mom Modi and dad Kiari. Baby kangaroos typically remain fully dependent on the pouch for protection and nourishment for the initial six to nine months. Once it’s ready to venture out it will be visible to guests in the Zoo’s Australian Adventure habitat.
Cleveland, 1973. You’ve come a long way, baby. In the 1960s and 1970s, Lake Erie was widely considered a "dead lake" due to severe pollution. This was primarily caused by excessive nutrient loading, particularly phosphorus, from agricultural runoff, sewage, and industrial discharge. It led to massive algal blooms, which depleted oxygen levels in the lake, creating "dead zones" and harming aquatic life.
