World in a weekend: Ethnic, garlic and lantern festivals galore

Photos courtesy Cleveland Cultural Gardens
It’s a three-mile long testament to the area's rich ethnic diversity and one of Cleveland’s most unique attractions. And yet, most Clevelanders drive past the flowers, flags and memorials without stopping.
They’ll have a reason come Sunday when One World Day hits Cleveland Cultural Gardens. The parade and festival celebrates waves of immigrants built the city with music, performances and food.
It’s also a fine time to check out the 35 gardens along MLK Drive in Rockefeller Park.
Founded in 1916 and built on 250 acres donated by John D. Rockefeller, the gardens are landscaped outdoor museums with striking architecture, leafy greenery and flair. Take photos. More info.
Egyptian Festival: This celebration bridges old and new worlds. Food and music are paired with a bazaar and tours of St. Mark’s that recount the early days of Christianity. Info.
Cleveland Garlic Festival: Beware, vampires. The Shaker Square bash features music, vendors, Miss Garlic 2025 and garlic-based shrimp, wings and, yes, Mitchell’s ice cream. Saturday-Sunday. Into.
Water Lantern Festival: Food, live music, a scavenger hunt and a colorful launch of glowing lanterns onto Coe Lake in Berea. Saturday. Info.
St. Josaphat Ukrainian Festival: Parma’s Ukrainian Village bash rolls out a parade, music, dancers, art served with pierogi, stuffed cabbage and borscht. Saturday-Sunday. Info.
Calls for national boycott of Meijer after Cleveland cop-cam goes viral

Photo via Meijer
Meijer has received social media outrage and calls for a nationwide boycott due to an incident in its Seven Hills store.
It stems from police bodycam footage that shows a store manager having a 19-year-old deli worker with special needs arrested for allegedly stealing $110 in fruit cups and chicken over three months.
In the video, a manager states that the employee, James Denison, took food worth about a dollar a day without paying. He documented the thefts over months until a threshold justifying police involvement.
Denison, who lives nears the store and walked to work every day, stated that he had intended to pay it back.
The footage has gone viral and Meijer has been savaged for being ‘petty’ and ‘cruel.’
On Thursday, Meijer issued a statement:
“We take this very seriously and recognize that the situation should have been handled differently. Earlier this year, we implemented a new procedure to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We’ve learned a great deal of experience. We hold ourselves to a higher standard and are committed to making sure our actions reflect how we want to treat each other.”
Black Keys are back

When Akron’s Black Keys hit the Beachland Tavern to play their first show in 2002, they sounded like a scruffy blues duo raised on low-fi junk and garage-rock.
The charming sound led to an upward ascent into arenas and produced two platinum albums, “Brothers” and “El Camino,” and five Grammy Awards.
Last year, the duo – Dan Auerbach, guitar, and Patrick Carney, drums – hit a big speed bump when it had to cancel a national tour due to poor ticket sales.
Auerbach and Carney regrouped by firing management, recording with a new album, “No Rain, No Flowers,” and hitting the road for a new tour that brings them to Blossom Music Center. 7:30 tonight. Info.

Flacco will start, but drama will go on
The endless QB drama will no doubt keep soldiering on after the Browns finale against the Rams -- 1 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Bank Field.
The order has set, for this game at least: First Joe Flacco, then Dillon Gabriel, then Shedeur Sander will take snaps under center. Kenny Pickett is out with a hamstring.
Starters on offense are expected to play for 20-25 snaps, depending on game flow.
Flacco has been named the starter when the regular season starts Sept. 7 at home against the Bengals.
VINTAGE CLEVELAND
