World Cup Worries, Cleveland Cheers: Brazil-Egypt Match Bucks FIFA's Attendance Slump

FIFA

The Iran War, travel costs and record ticket prices have conspired to create a nightmare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

  • More than 70% of hotels around the U.S. report shortfalls in bookings.

  • FIFA continues to cancel and release reserved hotel blocks.

  • Resale ticket prices have dropped up to 25%.

Cleveland is turning out to be a rare bright spot in North America.

Torcida power

On Saturday, Brazil will take on Egypt at Huntington Bank Field – a friendly match that is part of the World Cup’s Road to 26 series.

The five-time cup winner boasts soccer’s most passionate fan base. There’s also the rapidly-growing Brazilian diaspora in the U.S. -- more than 26% more than overall immigrant growth since 2010.

“Tickets are selling at a strong pace for the final 10 days,” says Andrea Yoch, of match promoter Unified Events.

Torcida power is driving visitors, near and far.

“Top locations for sales are Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus, NY, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Chicago, DC and Toledo,” says Yoch. “But we also have buyers from across the entire country, Mexico and Canada.”

While the Brazilian and Egyptian communities are relatively small – 5,000 and 8,000, respectively, in Ohio -- both are tight-knit and travel well.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Brazilian eatery Batuqui in Larchmere will host a pre-game party with live music and food.

There’s also growing interest in soccer, as Columbus Crew owner Jimmy Haslam expands its reach to the area.

Last April, 60,614 fans watched the Crew play Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF at Huntington Field.

Wait, Cleveland? Inside the City's Unlikely Rise on Global 'Best' Lists

Ah, the most beautiful cities in the world… Rome, Barcelona, Marrakech, Kyoto… Cleveland?

Even diehard cheerleaders might raise an eyebrow at U.K. travel publication Love Exploring ranking Cleveland the world’s 48th most beautiful city.

What possessed them to do that?

“Cleveland makes the most of its gorgeous spot on Lake Erie with a picturesque waterfront area. The rest of the city is pretty too, with well-maintained historic buildings including the impressive Arcade.”

So, I dug in to find out why Cleveland has appeared on so many ‘best’ lists over the last two years?

  • It boasts one of the nation's largest collections of early-20th century architecture– which is why it’s a stand-in for Gotham in films.

  • We take Lake Erie for granted. Outsiders find it striking.

  • Despite its economic decline, Cleveland inherited institutions that few cities have.

  • The search for grit and authenticity has become a 21st century obsession.

Yeah, it ain’t Barcelona. But it’s pretty cool…

Whip It Good: Devo Heads Home to Akron with a Fizzy Swensens’ Surprise

Courtesy Swensens

Break out the yellow jump suits and spud-boy antics… Oh, no, I mean, oh, yes, it’s Devo.

The legendary band that turned an anti-Darwinian "de-evolution" concept into a pop phenomenon is coming home – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Akron City Theatre. Info.

One of the zaniest food collaboration ever whipped up awaits them.

Swensens has created a fizzy Cola Mocha Whip It that pays tribute to the band’s Devo’s 1980 breakout hit.

“Whip It” is a satire of the American ‘can-do attitude’… But wait, the collaboration validates it…

Who would’ve imagined such a concoction?

It’s on sale at Swensens’ locations through Wednesday.

Browns Fans Can’t Win: Cheered Him On, Cheered for Him to Leave. Lost Both Ways.

They cheered for him to win. Then they couldn’t wait to rejoice at his leaving.

They got neither… Man, it’s tough being a Browns fan.

Tuesday, is the Deshaun Watson Cut Day Party – 11 a.m. at Huntington Bank Field.

Call it a day of mockery months in the planning to celebrate the end of a four-year nightmare. Over 900 respondents declared an interest in attending.

As event organizer and social media personality Reflog_18 proclaimed: “HE IS GONE! WE MADE IT TO THE END OF THE WORST TRADE IN NFL HISTORY! LETS PARTY!!”

Well, the event is a non-starter – not only because he wasn’t cut… He’s increasingly looking like the team’s starting quarterback.

Sorry, Browns fans. You just can’t win, no matter what you want.
