Beyoncé gives love (and $$$) to Cleveland’s most interesting barber

Waverly Willis has received raves for his cuts. But he’s much more than a barber.
The owner of Urban Kutz – Ohio’s largest minority-owned barbershop chain – is one of Cleveland’s most inspiring success stories.
Just two decades ago, he was living on the streets, eating out of dumpsters and scrounging for cigarettes.
Now, he’s getting love from Beyonce.
Her BeyGOOD Foundation has awarded Urban Kutz a grant for its work over the chair and in support of men’s health.
“[BeyGOOD] has granted Urban Kutz a grant for the community service that we’re doing,” says Willis. “From saving lives from blood pressure to letting men find out if they have prostate cancer.”
Urban Kutz offers free screenings and tests and opened its shops during COVID-19 to provide vaccinations.
The grant is dedicated to “empowering stylists, fueling entrepreneurship, and honoring the vital role salons play in their communities.” Thirty-seven winners across the country were awarded $10,000 grants.
“Just think, 20 years ago I walked into a homeless shelter with a garbage bag full of everything that I owned, addicted to drugs and alcohol,” says Willis. “You cannot tell me that God ain’t good.”
Guards Ball! Crazy comeback lands Cleveland in first

The Tigers threw their best at the Guardians. And they lost.
Tarik Skubal, Detroit’s ace and the most dominant pitcher in baseball, was cruising through five shut-out, two-hit innings.
Then came The Twilight Zone, er, the sixth.
A bunt. Another bunt. An infield chopper. David Fry injured when a ball ricochets off his bat and hits him in the face. A wild pitch. A balk. An infield dribbler.
Three runs without a single ball hit out of the infield (or traveling more than 65.5 miles off the bat).
Detroit’s ace and hopes rattled… Guards Ball, 5-2.
The win ties them with Detroit, though they are ahead because they own the tiebreaker in head-to-head play.
The Guards are on the verge of making baseball history. In July, they were down 15.5 games to the games. Taking the division would mark the biggest comeback ever in MLB.
Troops to Cleveland: Safety or politics – or both?

U.S. Congressman Max Miller has called on Governor Mike DeWine to deploy the National Guard to Cleveland to provide a "visible presence" to deter crime.
DeWine responded by citing Ohio's "home rule" tradition, where mayors—not distant lawmakers—hold the reins on local law enforcement.
It’s turned it a contentious issue, with Mayor Justin Bibb and Michael Deemer, of non-profit Downtown Cleveland, responding to Miller.
"If you don’t visit, live, work, or represent downtown, don’t speak for downtown," said Deemer.
The CEO of one of the longest-running businesses in the Warehouse District sees Miller’s call as having a negative impact – whether troops are sent or not.
“Troops on street corners won’t instill a peaceful, serene feeling,” says Andy Revy, of Constantino’s. “And calling for them only stokes the flames of fear.”
That’s not to say downtown business owners aren’t concerned about safety.
“Both citizens and businesses want a safe environment, but we’ve had a business downtown for 20 years and never saw anything extraordinary,” says Revy. “We have a good police force and calling for troops is just going to scare people away.”

Negroni time at one of the city’s snazziest spots
Any place is fine for a Negroni. Having one at Speakeasy at Quintana’s really hits the spot. The second-floor bar located above Quintana’s barber shop is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. After all, you have to get buzzed in through the secret door in the bookcase. Located inside a 1920s house, it feels like a speakeasy from the Prohibition Era. Through Saturday, the joint will host Negroni Week – a sipping soiree and a fundraiser for people studying mixology and hospitality. Info.
