Up, down and up again, the roller-coaster season rides again.

The Guardians looked dead on Tuesday. Then came Brayan Rocchio’s heroic walk-off.

Down-and-out Wednesday, until Petey Halpin became the unlikely hero.

The fill-in outfielder had been 1-35 against lefty pitchers before hitting a three-run homer to send the Guards into first place for the first time since July 3.

Now what?

It was a turbulent start for Franz Welser-Möst when he stepped onto the podium at Severance Hall in 2002 as the seventh music director of The Cleveland Orchestra.

The Austrian conductor had a reputation for being difficult – after a stint in London, when, musicians at the Philharmonic had dubbed him “Frankly Worse than Most.”

Critics were no kinder – there and early on in Cleveland.

He didn’t do himself any favors with he described Cleveland as an “inflated farmer’s village” in an interview in Austria.

Or when he spoke of courting “rich widows” and “blue-haired ladies” to keep the orchestra afloat.

Twenty-five years later, Welser-Möst is the longest-tenured of the ensemble’s Music Director.

His 25^th and final season will leave behind a deep legacy.

By the end of the season, he will have led more than 1,200 performances across 93 cities in 15 U.S. states and 26 countries.

The New York Times ranks Cleveland’s most popular band among America’s finest.

Welser-Möst is also be lauded for expanding its international presence, navigating through the pandemic and economic challenges.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, he’ll lead the orchestra through a performance of features Strauss' "Four Last Songs" and Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 8." Info.

It’s like a scene in a coming-of-age movie.

A teenager goes to see bands, lands a job in a record store and befriends the prime movers of the scene – and goes on to document it with a fanzine that would become the defining document of Cleveland’s punk movement.

Enter Jim Ellis.

In the 1970s, he launched CLE – the underground mag that covered bands and figures such as Pere Ubu, Devo, the Dead Boys, Electric Eels, Pagans and Peter Laughner.

Now he’s back with CLE Records, to release music by new bands in the scene.

“There was so much happening back then, but I’m interested in what’s happening now.” says Ellis. “There are so many great bands coming out that deserve to get their music out.”

CLE has records by seven Cleveland bands out or coming out, and he’s throwing a concert to showcase their work – 1 p.m. Sunday at Treelawn Social Club. Info.

It features Bands Kiss Me Deadly, Moon Echo Garden, Duo Decibel System, Non Bruises, Awesome Quest, Dave Swanson’s Mystery Airship and Doug McKean.

FRIDAY

Joe Torry: He’s appeared in shows like ER and NYPD Blue and The hosted the Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. He brings his stand-up routine to Funny Bone 7 & 9:30 p.m. Info.

SATURDAY

Wax & Tracks Fest: Vinyl Groove Records throws a bash with vendors, fellow record stores and two stages of music. 11 a.m. Info.

Old Brooklyn Night Faire: Hear ye, hear year – it’s a party with makers, artists, musicians and sideshow performers. 5 p.m. at Stanford Ave. and Pearl Road. Info.

Rush: The Canucks were a little-known band – until they got their big break when WMMS started playing their ‘Working Man’ 45 in 1974. They hit Rocket Arena. 7:30 p.m. Info.

SUNDAY

Run Through History: Lake View Cemetery hosts it’s 15^th annual run and walk past the graves of some of Cleveland’s most famous deceased residents. 8:50 a.m. Info.

Peaches: She’s a – take your pick – queer icon, feminist, confrontational, troublemaker. And she brings her brand of electroclash to Iron Globe. 7 p.m. Info.

It’s nature’s most amazing journeys.

Every September, eastern monarch butterflies travel southward as much as far as 2,500 to 3,000 miles from their breeding grounds in Canada to Mexico.

Welcome to Cleveland.

The area sits squarely in their fall migration corridor and is the first destination for many of them after flying over Lake Erie, non-stop.

They arrive in early September and can stay into mid-October, depending on the weather.

Wendy Park on Whiskey Island is their top spot for roosting, in the  cottonwood and cherry trees.

Ditto for the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve, Euclid Beach, Gordon Park, Huntington Reservation.
