1920s Cleveland Landmark Still Delivers Style, Historyโ€”and a Mound of Mussels for Under $10

For a century, this Renaissance-inspired palace on Lake Avenue in Cleveland has caught the eye of passers-by.

They should pull over.

Donโ€™s Lighthouse Grille still boasts history and style, yes.

Check out the classic bar, those regal arched windows, the vaulted ceiling.

The 3,500-square-foot building has maintained many of the charms of Poschkeโ€™s Barbeque โ€“ built 1920s by German immigrant Otto Poschke. Or when it was a Howard Johnsonโ€™s until the 1970s.

Opened in 1972, Donโ€™s also boasts one of the areaโ€™s best Happy Hours โ€“ where stellar offerings meet generous portions.

Hmm, a mini-plate of musselsโ€ฆ

Guess again.

The Prince Edward Island Mussels boasts a mound of them, at a pauper's price: $9.50.

Itโ€™s one of seven food offerings, including the Walleye Bites and Salmon Dip (both delightful, $10 each).

The drink list boasts seven classic elixirs, from the Dirty Martini, Whiskey Sour and Gin & Tonic to drinks sippers you donโ€™t see often anymore in Barland, like a Cosmopolitan.

High Rates, No More Bidding Wars โ€“ But Reasonably-Priced Homes Still Selling

The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage is hitting the highest levels in a year โ€“ and itโ€™s taking a toll on the housing market around the country.

Yet Cleveland keeps on holding strong.

In August, the cityโ€™s market offered buyers more choice without the slowdowns of other cities.

Active listings rose 13.6% year-over-year to 4,148 โ€” nearly four times the national gain. New listings climbed 6%.

But theyโ€™re still selling -- with homes on the market for 41 days vs. 60 days nationally.

Insights:

  • Sellers who priced competitively from the start still see results.

  • But the days of multiple offers are less automatic with the increase in inventory.

  • Buyers have more power and choice than they have enjoyed in recent years.

  • Sellers benefit from relatively quick sales and a price level that remains far more accessible than the national average.

Bottom Line:

  • The window for finding a home without a bidding war is wider than it has been in some time, but well-priced properties continue to find buyers without long waits.

  • Declines in high-flying markets on the West Coast, Sun Belt and Florida โ€“ as much as 10% ย โ€“ have driven buyers to the Midwest.

  • Of the top cities people are leaving for Cleveland, eight are among the countryโ€™s most expensive markets.

Theyโ€™ll Be Singing โ€œOh, Danny Boyโ€™sโ€ in Playhouse Square Next Year

Within days of debuting in Rocky River in 1991, pizza lovers were singing the praise of Danny Boyโ€™s.

Thirty-five years later, itโ€™s a Northeast Ohio institution โ€“ and now itโ€™s making a move on downtown.

Next year, the Italian eatery will open in the former Green Rooster Farmsย space in the Hanna Building.

โ€œWe are thrilled that they have chosen the Playhouse Square District for their first Downtown Cleveland location,โ€ said Craig Hassall, Playhouse Square CEO.

โ€œDanny Boyโ€™s will not only provide more dining options for workers, residents and visitors to Playhouse Square, it also will add to the vitality of our animated downtown district as we continue to expand our offerings Beyond the Stage.โ€
