Cleveland Says Goodbye to Brutal Chill – Just as Warm Vibes and Revelry Roll into Town

Finally, one of the longest cold streaks on record came to end on Tuesday.
Forty-seven degrees.
It broke an 18-day streak in which the high of the day was under 32 degrees.
It was a run not seen since in 25 years – but far from the brutal winter of 1976-77, when there were 38 straight days of temperatures below freezing.
While Thursday is expected to see highs below freezing, Friday through Saturday Feb. 21 will mark a run of highs over 32 degrees.
Just in time for a crowded field of events:
Valentine’s Day: The day of romance is Saturday. Check out our suggestions for places in the 216 Rundown below.
Cleveland Kurentovanje: Saturday’s parade at the Slovenian National Home caps off a week of celebrations and rolls out furry creatures that summon mythical powers to deliver spring. Info.
Lunar New Year: The Year of the Horse starts Feb. 17. Events like the Kwan Family Lion Dance start on Saturday. Check out Friday’s 216 Scoop. For AsiaTown events, go here.
Mardi Gras: The debaucherous celebration of the last day to indulge before lent is Tuesday.
Paczki Day: The Mardi-related day celebrations indulgence with pillowy, jam-filled Polish pastries in eateries and bakeries like Rudy’s Strudel, which opens at 5 a.m.
Be honest — at 47°, did you… 🌤️
From Closings to Comebacks: Sazani Oceana and Nightjar Bring New Life to Shaker Square and Eton Chagrin

A spate of closings has hit the scene of late – breweries, eateries and bars. Alas, not all is bad news.
Friday brings the openings of two much-anticipated spots:
Sazani Oceana
The upscale seafood restaurant in old Edwins Too spot in Shaker Square is a joint venture between two familiar faces: Browns legend Josh Cribbs and Akin Affrica – whose Zanzibar Soul Fusion has been an anchor in Shaker Square since 2013.
While the menu is focused on seafood – from crab cakes to oysters – it includes French toast, meat and vegan offerings and Southern classics.
Nightjar
Eton Chagrin has seen restaurants come and go and come again. Just when it loses one, another moves in.
The intimate cocktail and jazz bar by Michael Paley and Sam Friedman mixes classic drinks with European café vibes and New Orleans flair. It rolls out small plates, snacks, desserts and coffees.
The focus is on the elixirs, which you might have experienced if you’ve been to Paley’s stellar Cent’ Anni. Or Friedman’s charming Hangar.
Are Shaker & Eton officially back? 👀
As Mayor Bibb Woos Investment Abroad, Small Businesses Feel the Squeeze at Home
In December, Mayor Justin Bibb flew to NYC to meet with Goldman Sachs president John Waldron to pitch him on development plans he’s dubbed Cleveland ERA.
It sets out to revitalize the industrial economy and infrastructure and attract investment for Hopkins airport and waterfront development.
Back home, Bibb’s handling of the economy is increasingly being questioned by small business owners — who have taken issue with a myriad of policies:
Raising parking fees.
Calling for a ‘small tax’ on downtown operators to help fund upkeep of sports facilities.
Plans to create bus-only lanes on West 25th.
Shop owners also lament City Hall’s inability to foster a forward-looking business climate.
Tomorrow’s Special Edition 216 Insider will explore these issues and how it is impacting the local economy.
The Insider is a deep-dive into issues confronting the area – from data centers to real estate, civic preservation and the state of industries.
