Three much-anticipated openings add international flair to food scene

Trendy districts and name chefs grab headlines, but it’s the faraway flavors of international cuisines that have provided most of the growth – not to mention the most unique eateries – in the food scene. The trend continues with the opening of three much-anticipated spots:

Masala Monsoon: The Indian restaurant opens in the longtime home of Antonio’s Pizza in Parma -- Tuesday. The menu boasts classic Tandoori dishes and unique takes on masalas, curries and soups, salmon and chili. Wait, it also serves… Pizzas? Pastas? “Antonio’s was a big part of the community, and we want to pay tribute to it,” says co-owner Upinder Sawhney. There’s another reason: “Pizza and pasta have become popular in India,” he adds. “And we’ll mix things up with different sauces and spices and proteins to bring new, modern takes to Parma.”

Coyoacan Taqueria & Brew: Reynaldo Galindo will open the Mexican eatery/brewery in the former Balaton space with a Grand Opening -- 6 p.m. Tuesday.  It offers a fast-casual approach to tacos, burritos and bowls to go with a microbrewery that specializes in Mexican-style beers. Galindo is the son of Maria de la Luz Galindo, owner of Luchita’s, which closed in 2022. Next month, he’ll relaunch the beloved West Side eatery when Galindo opens a new Luchita’s in another part of the building.

Kyuramen: “It’s coming soon.” For almost a year, that was the response of South Park management when asked about the Ohio debut of fast-growing chain in the Strongsville mall. Well, it’s here. Kyuraman opens today in the space that once housed Chipotle and Five Guys. The glowing lighting and sleek honeycomb décor looks nothing like the food court chowdown. The eatery rolls out a modern take on Japanese cuisine, including nine types of ramen and an array of “rice & burger” offerings.

First look: Ebreeq brings the unique flavors of Yemeni coffee to Cleveland

Photos by John Petkovic

Yemeni cuisine travels under the radar in Cleveland. But a Yemeni coffee shop?

They’ve been non-existent, until now – thanks to Ebreeq Coffee House. Located in the 200 Public Square building, the just-opened spot offers an aromatic mix of coffees, teas and desserts.

While coffee originated in Ethiopia, it was cultivated and turned into a beverage in Yemen. The coffee is renowned for its complex earthiness and tones of dried fruit often accompanied by cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

“There’s nothing like it,” says owner Dia Albadani, who moved from Sanaa to Michigan 10 years ago. “I came to Cleveland to because there aren’t any Yemeni coffee shops here.”

Brazil and Columbia have dominated the coffee market, but Yemeni coffee has become a cult phenomenon in recent years – with hundreds of shops popping up across the U.S.

Ebreeq serves a variety of Yemeni favorites: Mufawar (served with cardamom and cream). Qishr (steeped coffee husks with ginger and cinnamon) and Adeni chai (Yemeni black tea, cardamom, milk).

All three pair well with the Honeycomb – a Yemeni pastry that features small buns baked in honeycomb pattern featuring cream cheese and honeyed syrup.

Ebreeq also pairs Yemeni music with earthy tones, mosaic walls and geometric designs inspired Arabic art.

“People come in because they’re curious,” says Albadani, “They come back because they love the coffee.”

Housing is a mess around the U.S… So, why is Cleveland so strong?

Warning signs are everywhere:

OK, so how you explain the resilience in the Cleveland housing market? Simply put, Cleveland is benefitting from being a laggard for so long.

“Low demand kept home prices well below the national level for the last 20 years,” says Hannah Jones, an analyst at Realtor.com. “That low demand has meant little upward pressure on prices—even as other metros heated up.”

For decades, there were fewer houses built here versus other markets – which is why the average home is 65 years vs. the national average of 36 years.

The resulting constrained supply and the perceived affordability among out-of-towners has turned Cleveland into one of the unlikely leaders in the country.

It’s ranked third behind Pittsburgh and Detroit when it comes to home affordability. It’s also in the top five metro areas when it comes to year-over-year price increases – sitting in 3rd  behind Newark, N.J. and Milwaukee, Wi. with a 7.6% year-over-year appreciation.
